1964 ears quads for $500, sounded worse than a pair of $60 monster turbines that sounded horribly muddy compared to the coppers

Some of the higher end stuff is actually pretty loved around here, but if you were ever unfortunate enough to hear the $5 earbuds they make, you will be scarred for life.

yea I tried the ones within the £30 -£40 and they were bad - sounded like the free ones you get when u buy a walkman

Sony and Sennheiser run very similar business models when it comes to headphones
as in they both manufacture - the good, the bad, and the downright ugly when it comes
to SQ.

Still, many would argue that we should be thankful because if it were not for the
masses of mediocre models then items like the SA-5000 and HD 800 would
never see the light of day. They would be far too unprofitable.

Out of the few headphones I've heard (and not counting Beats by Dre and iPod/iPhone earbuds), I'll have to say the worse headphones I've heard were Klipsch Image ONE (because it sounded really boring to me), Sony XB500 (because everything felt pushed back and surprisingly, I didn't notice any bass impact whatsoever even on bass heavy songs), and Bose AE2 (because like the Klipsch, it felt boring for me). I would praise Bose QC3 or QC15 (I forgot which one it was) for it's mind boggling noise cancellation. The only skullcandys I've heard were the Aviators. They were pretty good but I wouldn't buy them for $150.

Of the "audiophile" headphones I've heard, I thought the worst was the Grado sr80i.  I just didn't get the Grado sound, no soundstage, bright, harsh, and way too forward, as well as being uncomfortable.

Good point.  Its just that I've pretty much gone off sony because I have spent a lot of money on their products with the price never really justifying it.  Bought voice recorders, walkman mp3 players, CD players, headphones etc.....and all were so disappointing :frowning2: .  Now I dont dare to invest in expensive headphones from them

Various Skullcandy IEMs, have all distinguished themselves by achieving the impossible...

...sounding WORSE than stock Apple earbuds.  No surprise there.

I am surprised to see Grado appearing repeatedly in this thread.

Skullcandy skullcrushers.  It's like they took one constant, droning, singular bass note, made it really muddy and distorted, and tried to make a song out of it. NO mids, NO treble, but of course, I thought it sounded good at the time, I just though "OMG listen to that bass!"
