Official Ipod Video / Classic 5g+5.5g+6g+6.5g+7g SSD Mod thread

Got an iPod Classic from eBay with a Red X error. Assumed it was something with the hard drive so used an iFlash Solo but it still showed the error. Red X after 2 seconds of the Apple logo appearing.

Disconnected all memory devices (iFlash/hard drive) and turned on the iPod but it still shows the Red X and the device powers on only when it is plugged in to a power source.

On the Tarkan website, it says I have to use a different HDD connector because I have the 160gb thick iPod Classic. Yet to get it but do you guys think it's something with the logic board (820-2168)?

What other logic boards can I use instead of the one I have? Would a 5/5.5 gen logic board work?

Thanks!

Make sure the CF ribbon is not damaged and is properly installed and the battery is fine, then try to put the ipod in disk mode, then connect to computer and let itunes do the rest.

With what capacity SDXC cards are you using the cheap adapters?

At one time not too long ago, only Tarkan's adapter actually worked with libraries bigger than 128GB, because he runs custom firmware to allow for LBA48.

You could load a 256GB SDXC card into the cheap adapter, and it would seemingly work fine until such time as your synced library exceeded 128GB (the upper limit of LBA28), at which point the card would become corrupted.

I even tried flashing Tarkan's firmware onto what looked like a compatible adapter (with his approval), and that did not work either, apparently there was something different about that particular hardware.

So you are successfully using a cheap SDXC adapter with a library greater than 128GB in size?

Hi MikeyFresh,

I got my new adapter from iFlash.xyz for the ipod 4th gen 20gb monochrome version. The iflash to cf card

I have tried both the komputerbay cf card and a micro sd card with a micro sd to sd converter into the sd to cf adapter and I get to the restore part and I get a message that says, Cannot restore error 1437

I cannot get past this screen.

Do you know what is causing this?

The format of the sd card is FAT32, MBR

The new battery is installed and fully charged

I really dont understand why it doesnt work. It goes and downloads the restore software , then I get this error 1437.

Am I supposed to be using a firewire cable as apposed to a usb cable?

I don't think the ribbon is damaged on examination. The battery might be. This is what happens.

1. Plug in iPod to power source.
2. Apple logo appears for 2 seconds or so followed by the Red X.
3. Device switches off after 10-15 seconds.
4. No combination of buttons work (hence no disk mode) and the device powers on only after the power cable is reinserted.

-There was an instance where low battery was displayed.

I asked this once before, and I guess nobody had actually used this particular combo, but in case anyone here has...

As PNY cards are now even _more_ expensive thanks to the £ falling against the $, Kingston and Patriot cards are now a lot cheaper than PNY, especially 512gb.   But I've found before that nothing but PNY works if you are using a 6/7th gen plus rockbox.  Not even sure about 5.5 gen.

Has anyone gotten a 5.5/6/7 gen working with rockbox and a non-PNY card 256gb or larger?

Hmm... I've avoided PNY for about a decade, they used to be incredibly unreliable as far as RAM and flash memory went and I never gave them another chance, especially as they're still on the lower end of the price spectrum.

Using all Samsung brand cards here with 0 issue.\

edit: Only using 5th gen/5.5gen here, but im using an iFlash quad, so would be surprised if cards that worked on 5th gen didn't work on 6th and 7th but i dunno!

Hmm, can't find any samsung sdxc cards on first search.  Sounds like they'd be too costly for me anyway.

I found both Kingston and Patriot (256gb) only worked on 5th gen, not 7th, whereas PNY worked on all.  Others have found the same.  Have heard its to do with the non-standard disk formatting the later gens use and that Kingston doesn't like for some reason.

Maybe they're not as available overseas but here in the USA you can get the Samsung 64gb for $19 anywhere easy.

Kingston is also known for having very picky USB flash drives Windows and Linux installers don't like, so I've stopped buying Kingston a few years ago too.
