OP already owns the D5000

Yes, but this thread is him looking for something with forward vocals, which is something the Denon line isn't known for.

Two different headphones with two different sound signatures.  So if looking for a headphone with forward vocals, no the 701's/702's wont be a step down.

Grado RS1/HF2 > DacMagic > Gilmore Lite

The above can be had off the Head-Fi sales forums for about your budget and be what you're looking for.

The K70x isn't a vocal centric headphone.

Here’s a second vote for the Beyerdynamic DT 990/600 Ω. In my opinion much more crispy than the AKG K701, which I’ve been using for two years before I switched to Beyerdynamic.

You also should be warned that due to its form and construction the headband of the AKG K701 may cause some pain at the top of your head. If possible try to wear them for 10 oder 20 minutes before making your purchase.

Best wishes,

Werner.

So... DT 990 + Schiit Lyr  VS AKG 701 + Schiit Lyr.

Its a tough one.

Why do you consider bying a Lyr? If you do not plan to switch to some orthodynamic headphones at a later time, the Valhalla works real fine in connection with the Beyerdynamic DT 990/600 Ω.

My headphone setup as of June 2011.

I’m sure the Lyr is a great amp, but the Valhalla really drives the Beyerdynamics quite well and delivers more and power you’ll probably ever need for these headphones. However, if you decide to purchase the AKG K701, then the Lyr certainly is the better match.

Is there any chance for you to try each headphone before you decide which one to purchase? I would highly recommend doing this.

Compared to the Audio GD C-2C amp, is the Valhallo decent? (thats if you've ever tried an audio Gd amp)

It's worth mentioning that the Denons are very bass forward giving the low end more volume which does set everything back a few steps. The K701 on the other hand are the complete opposite, they have very little bass to speak of which allows you to focuses on the mid and high end. A warm tube sounding amp like the Lyr might give a little body back to the 701s but in comparison with the Denons I think you'll be disappointed, considering you bought the Denons for their dominant bass.

As far as recommendations the Fostex T50RP stand out for their vocal detail performance however they do lack body and are somewhat hollow albeit not to the extent of the K701, perhaps another ortho as suggested above would be a better fit. I like the Sony SA5000 idea, very detail oriented, sounds fantastic with all vocals.

Grados got absolutely fantastic, magic mids, absolutely great natural vocals. No dt880 250 ohm, no dt880/600 (vintage) - I prefer DT1350 over these.
maybe T1 would be great. akg 701 is also great, but Grado (heard 325is and RS1<--better, smooth) is magic

I always heard that Grados are sibilant :xf_eek:.

my ears cannot handle sibilance whatsoever, if this is untrue for the higher end models however, i would not hesitate to pull the trigger.

Since i do love the bass my Denon's give out, ill lean towards the beyers due to them having more low end bass in general, compared to the AKG that is.

Ill do a bit of research on the sony's in the meantime.

try stax, rlly any model and don't look back!

Arent staxes really expensive =p?
