Shure SRH940 or Ultrasone or other?
Jun 6, 2011 at 10:08 PM Post #16 of 32
i own the shure srh840 and used to own the shure srh750dj. i guess you could call shure one of my favorite brands. but the thing is if your looking into ultrasone then the shure srh750dj might be a good choice as they have the bass you may be looking for.

to everyone saying the shure's are overpriced i have to say how is headphones that cost $129.99 that compare to headphones 300 - 400 $ overpriced. the shure headphones are amazing deals. and from what i read the shure srh940 has more controlled bass, better soundstage, and better treble. but i am not sure on these and i recommend you take advice from people who have tried them.

For me, Shure headphones are definitely not overpriced. If they could come up against other heavy competition (e.g. SRH840 vs M50/HFI-580/HD558) I don't see why 'overpriced' would come to mind.

I wouldn't say Shures are cold, but they definitely are analytical and accurate. I can agree with it being boring, but too boring like, say the K70x. I would say these type of headphones would go to those who want uncoloured music and prefer everything as accurate as possible. These aren't my type of headphones, but they are good. Excellent actually.

Shures do have a special sound, and if you already love it, and it seems like you do, the SRH940's are the pinnacle of that sound. If you get them and love them half as much as I do, they will be your new favorites. :)

So then you think they are worth the $300 over other headphones with similar characteristics in this price range?

Also, what about amping (like someone else mentioned...)
Is it worth it with all headphones?
Or are some cans better suited for amps than others?
Advantages?

Thanks.

i have a fiio e5 and it definitely improves the enjoyment of my shure srh840. i would assume the shure srh940 would be the same. the same amp would work fine to.

I would definitely get the denon d5000s if I were you, they can be found on the for sale forum for around $300.
Also at $300 there really is no need for an amp as long as you can drive them loud enough you will be fine.
$200 headphones + $100 amp < $300 headphones + no amp

I said there aren't many options at that price range that do well unamped. The bolded part of what you said is a HUGE generalization and definitely not always true. Example: SRH840 with an iBasso D2 vs an AKG K701 unamped. You really think that the AKG will do better here?

Well... those Denon's go over budget by a LOT... probably as a next step but not right now!

BTW, I'm listening to some ATHs M50s... they have a couple of hundred hours already burned in (they're from a co-worker of mine). As of now, they have done great with electronica/dubstep stuff... but once the pace changes to hardcore, or rock, etc. seems something is missing... not as much clarity as even the cheaper SRH 440s... seems to have a "darker" sound as in missing some highs or maybe they emphatize the lows a bit more which is why is lacking?!? Don't know if I'm describing the sound correctly... still preferring the Shure's.

Another co-worker will bring me his Ultrasone Djs-something... (he's actually a DJ -- second job). The other one he was it's a Pioneer but.. oh my oh my... too bright and harsh!!! I guess Live DJs have to be used to that!?!?!

Thanks

Well I think the k701's are fairly rubbish and even with a good amp are still below the srh840.
I also think the k701's are much easier to drive than everyone says, as long as they get loud enough with low distortion and no clipping you are pretty much at the best the can sound.

gelocks, on the head-fi for sale forum d5000's turn up for $300's fairly regularly.

Those Denon's look really good... but remember, they will NOT be for home use... I will use them at work,
and I don't see the "portability" in them (and from what I can see, cables are not detachable, doesn't even
include a pouch or nothing... so 500+ and that's all I get?! and BTW is it $300 used?!? I don't like buying
used headphones... u never know...... LOL!!!)

I would love a complete package...

So it seems this is the list I got from you guys:

Fisher Audio FA-003
Ultrasone HFI-780
Shure 840s

any of these + AMP

-- (disregarded a couple due to not being closed or price/lack of content in the box)

Shure 940s seems to be in front still... ;-p

Other can I've been reading about is the Beyerdynamic dt770 but it SEEMS it's way to bassy? Anyone with
experience on these above and if you can compare with the Shure cans, even better.

P.S. And again, will amping be needed with ANY of these on the list.

Thanks

the shure srh840 requires a good source but does not need an amp to shine. of course an amp does improve the experience and my ffio e5 makes it buttery smooth yet fun.

There are many different versions of the DT770 which sound different, and they all need an amp to sound their best. Overall the headphone is unbalanced, but again the different versions have different bass. Here's a great comparison post: http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/513393/guide-sonic-differences-between-dt770-dt990-models-more

Thanks... and it seems my "suspicions" were correct (regarding my "bassy" statement) but incomplete!

Reading through reviews and opinions in the forum and elsewhere, it seems as if they focus on the high and low end of the spectrum
but forget about mids?!!? That's a no-no for me since most of what I listen to is guitar and vocals work...

ARRRGHHH I hate this!
Don't you just wish to have all the money in the world and buy everything instead?!?! :p

BTW, been reading about these ones also... --> AKG K271-MKII...
Seems their mids are good too... but looks like a complete package... so updated list:

Fisher Audio FA-003
Ultrasone HFI-780
Shure 840s
AKG K271-MKII

and 940s...

If I were to make a poll, what would be your votes?!

Thanks.
