This thread is becoming completely absurd. It's a disservice to the community here and rather pathetic.

And what's this about HeadFi caring about sound? Headfi doesn't care about sound, it cares about obscure Asian and European brands with crap interfaces and dodgy build quality and voodoo frozen cables sharing a name with Tito Ortiz's wife.

Come on guys, if you're not a fan of AKG's Q series that's fine, but don't turn this thread in which the OP has a legitmate question into how much I hate marketing while adding some silliness thread.  Remember we have a diverse community, where many of us heve different visions of what ideal audio should sound and look like.  And for the record I rather like the Q series.

The cable comes out of the front left side of the housing, and in your mirrored image the cable is on the back left side.  So no, the image was not flipped

You can also tell that the pads are angling the headphones backwards and he's wearing the phones this way in at least 2 pictures.

Unless he already thinks they sound especially bad so he could care less.  I highly doubt he had anything to do with even the color scheme.  They paid him to pose in some pictures and authorize his signature.  I find it hard to believe that Quincy would be into neon green it's more fitting of the exact opposite demographic in every way...

I would like to see 1/4" TRS stereo plug...it's likely not plugged into anything.

Embrace the hate!

It has nothing to do with hate, it's just the reality of the situation.  If head-fi wants companies to focus on sound rather than marketing gimmicks, head-fi should buy headphones that focus on sound rather than marketing gimmicks.

Well if the focus is sound, and these are identical the the k701/k702-then it's safe to say that they sound amazing. It's amazing how some headfiers so readily let corporate politics and/or headphone color turn them against an amazing sounding 'phone.

I do understand your engineering vs. cash grab statement though, and the fact that AKG seems to be resting upon their past laurels as opposed to innovating anymore. That said I do believe the k701 stands neck-and-neck with other flagships-after FULL burn in and proper amplification of course. And therein lies the problem imo.

As if those who purchase the Q701 don't care about sound?  This is where I put on my arguementative hat.  It's fine that in your opinion sound quality is the only thing that matters to you, the problem I have is when (it seems to me anyway) you imply that those you don't share those same views are simply whores of corprate marketing.  Keep in mind that most who purchase the Q701 know they're related to the K701/2.  The Q701 is not just some nameless shell rebadged as something else, its headphone that shares the same technological and sonic poweress of the K701/2 albiet with a few tweaks.  It is not a crime to want a headphone that both sounds and looks good.  Ideally, would one have prefered that AKG release a new headphone altogether?  Yes, of course, but the Q701 is certainly no slouch.

DjAmTraX, how comes you are looking for the Q701's now? I see that you had the AKG K702's which you've returned according to your sig, why did you return them? Im sure the Q701's are identical to the 701 and 702's?

Yes, for me, sound is the primary consideration, but, at the same time, I get it.  I mean, if someone is a huge Quincy Jones fan--and/or a huge fan of the colors in his headphone line--I can see why this line would appeal to that person (I like Quincy Jones, but I wouldn't buy a headphone specifically because he endorsed it).

I was just window shopping at the Formula One online store, and almost ordered a Red Bull Racing t-shirt (and, though I haven't ordered it yet, I just might).  Really, the only thing that separates it from a plain t-shirt in the same color is the team logo emblazoned across it (and, of course, the price).

(A) If you wonder whether the Quincy pics were flipped, is QJ right or left handed?

(B) I've yet to read a detailed account (expose?) of how the sound of the Qs differs from the 702 differs from the 701. Is there a sonic reason to buy one over another?

(C) I still enjoy my 501s, though they have no bottom end to speak of.

(D) Kinda like the green, and might be tempted if I hadn't spent my allowance on LCD-2s.

(E) Some posters on this thread might wanna cut back on the energy drinks...

I returned the K702 because I didn't like the sound, BUT I didn't give it enough time to open up. After owning the K271 MKII for a few months and liked the sound, I thought I'd give the K701 a try. I decided not to go with a Q701 because I felt that the K701 is more classic AKG. Mine should arrive this week. Stay tuned for my unboxing and impressions.
