On good sources(tapes, vinyls, good 1541/1540cd/dacs) the bass quantity of SR is just about right, bass is real & convincing, SR is the best, the king of transducer IMO.

Bass boost is an easy way to have more bass on portables & most sources nowadays(I am sorry, but yes, 95%  of them are suck, including some pricey "high end" sources)

I am not saying every one should go SR, listening music is all about having fun, I just don't want more or less bass on my current TDA1540 dac, I am also enjoying SR on my cell phone, to me quality, accuracy > quantity, but if someone give me a XR for free, I will be very happy too lol

Hi Head-fiers,

I have traded one of my old ER4P's thanks to the upgrade program for the ER4SR & ER4XR and I have got a code and 30 days to redeem it. Now I have a problem because I have to choose the right one (the SR?? the XR??) based on the comments and reviews you share with all of us. And because I live in Spain, if I get wrong it shall cost me a lot to undo the mess...

Thus, I have read carefully the review made by the Gadget Guy that Etymotic announced through Facebook. http://www.thegadgetguycolumn.com/2016/08/22/etymotic-er4sr-er4xr-audio-excellence/#.V73YCsTaPCS

In this review he states, talking about ER4XR, that: "Spec-wise and just like the SRs, the ER4-XR offers a regular frequency range, but a higher impedance and lower volume. The bass on the ER4-XRs is outstanding and clean, somewhat better than the SRs.  The mids and highs are no joke either, providing detailed accuracy and eliminating any hint of distortion or compression. Vocals really standout with the ER4-XRs as well, contrasting and sharp, and never piercing or overshadowing the bass."

Can somebody else confirm that the ER4XR has higher impedance and lower volume? I'm aware of the official specs (45 Omhs) and that the impedance is not fixed for all the frecuencies, but I don't fully understand what thats means in terms of perceived volume. When paired with my iphone 6s I set the volumen to 50-60%. That it means that I am going to raise the volume to, lets say, 70-80% to feel the same volume than, for instance, with my ER4P?

Thanks for your comments.

Yes. Typically you'll have to increase the volume a bit, but the iPhone is more than capable to drive it. However, I find myself less prone to turn the volume up with the XR (or the SR) than I was with my PT, maybe because of the richer/brighter top end and overall clarity.

After the "I just bought a new toy, and it's so great!" excitement had gone,
today I switched back to the Telefunken TH30/TH60,
then I found that the Telefunkens sound more musical, emotional, engaging, have more soul & depth in the music.
I felt I missed something in the music when I listen to SR for a period of time, now they are back.

I don't regret purchasing SR, it's more refined & transparent than Telefunken TH60, not a large margin, SR is about 10%-15% better in this regard.
SR is still the best earphone I've heard, and it's more musical than vintage Sennheiser.

I just found myself  30%-100% more happier, more to be moved when listening to Telefunken.
While SR is "true to the ear", the Telefunken is "true to the heart", they are in a different realm.
With ER4SR, musicians vocals are standing in front of me, bring me the joy.
With TH60, the musicians, vocals are giving all they have to me, music is holding me in her arms, brings tears to my eyes...

Telefunken is god of music

I can't directly compare the PT to the XR as I transitioned from an S to an XR, but the XR isn't an exceptionally loud (or exceptionally quiet) IEM. It is, however, significantly quieter than the Shure SE535.

The ER4SR and ER4XR have the same impedance.

You may want to turn up your iPhone a bit more compared to an ER4P but it can easily drive the SR and XR to a level much louder than I would recommend.  :)

The problem is that the majority of aftermarket cables go with a straight type of the connector and not 45 degree angled. I have a couple of cables with straight connectors. This is not very convenient I would say taking into account the way you put your ety in.

Understood. As long as I can fix things with my soldering iron, I'm good :)
Thanks again for the reply!

By the way, the main reason for me to purchase the ER4SR was a replaceable mmcx cable.
I never listen to any IEM with a supplied cable as they usually come with a 3 pole, poor material quality and quantity cables (in general).
So now I'm more than happy!

Many thanks for your answers EtyDave, thefitz & Voyageur...

Still, making the right decision is going to be challenging. It's a really pity not to have a place in (or near) Barcelona to test them both. From the Seeko measurement's graph, in the range from 1K to 18K the ER4P is maybe closer to the ER4XR than to the ER4SR, so maybe I'll go for the XR and try also the bast boost that coming from Etymotic I feel confident that will be well implemented and sound natural and no artificial.

By the way, would be interesting to have this comparison (I mean the Seeko measurements) coming from Etymotic. And in the meantime, have the chance to read an english version of the Seeko review...

Yes,s/sr/xr comparison graphs in high res (not too smoothed)... :)

At some point, I plan on doing this, but I'm not sure when it's going to happen.
