If you still love Etymotic ER4, this is the thread for you...

I don't know what cheap is (we're in head-fi :) but it's hard to find ER4S cable because of this +75ohm issue. There's so many cheap cable that advertised as "ER4S cable" on ebay, aliexpress etc. but don't believe them, these cables don't include +75ohm which is necessary for ER4S.

I think best solution is buying this S adapter from awwan: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FOR-ETYMOTIC-ER4-IN-EARPHONE-CABLE-ADAPTOR-S-SHURE-CABLE-VERSION-/290630811178
or this westone style, 2-pin version: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FOR-ETYMOTIC-ER4-IN-EARPHONE-CABLE-ADAPTOR-S-/300592438512

Then you can use any MMCX cable you want with your ER4S because this S adapters include +75ohm.

Hopefully that's 100ohm
@VeXun

What @mohandas said. You also have the option to switch to the 4P of you buy that adapter instead. I posted a tutorial in this thread somewhere. Let me know if you have trouble finding it.

It appears that only Awwan's adapters include the resistors for S and P. There are many replacement cables available using similar connectors but without the necessary resistors that are built into the original cable's bulky v-split. I guess they could be used with an inline 100ohm resistor, but the adapters will also give you a wide choice of cables.
Is anyone using the linum bax?

I'd love to try the linum bax, but I can't justify the cost for a cable.

Anyone know the cheapest but still good way to replace the er4s cable? Somewhere safe to buy. Can I buy this stuff on Amazon? If so can someone give me a link. Thanks

I linked to my tutorial somewhere in this thread, but it's actually here:

From my personal experience and what others have written on HF, Awwan is a very reliable seller. Not sure where you are, but you might want to message him and ask about expedited shipping prices. He normally ships by First Class Int'l Letter, but that can take a while coming from Hong Kong, depending on the destination.

4P adapter (MMCX): http://www.ebay.com/itm/290630811020
4S adapter (MMCX): http://www.ebay.com/itm/290630811178

He doesn't seem to have any 2-pin Westone adapters listed.

Are you sure these wouldn't be better compared to something like the Etymotic MC5 rather than the ER4S? These are $30 headphones, after all. The MC2 claims to be the best sound you can get under a $100. It seems doubtful that a $30 pair would not only sound better than the MC5, but would leapfrog the HF5 to rival the ER4S. Is it really *that* good?

Yeah, it's a good earphone.

On further listening, I have calmed down a bit. I think my initial opinion of the Carbon Tenores was coloured by me being determined that they live up to select glowing recommendations I had read. They are still good, but don't match the ER4S, admittedly. I do prefer them to the RE-400s. I'd say it's the best sub-$100 IEM I've heard.

My opinion: let your impressions settle down a bit. You will most likely perceive an IEM's quality different after a few days/weeks/months. With new toys, NTS is big within the first hours/day, so a tendentially neutral/objective comparison will only be possible after you got over the NTS and are able to make less subjective statements. That's why I normally never start writing a headphone review in Germany during the first days as I know it won't be objective at all. Minimum is a week of intense listening after I start writing about the sound, but reviews written weeks/months after I bought a new goodie tend to be more objective.

It really depends on the tenore you get. They fluctuate in the amount of bass that they have. I'm usually extremely shocked every time I listen to them again at how close they are to the ER4S but better bass. Make no mistake, each pair does differ in bass quantity and that can have a huge effect on perceived quality

Tenores are great for their well tuned tonality that resembles etys, but there is no match for the resolution er4 provides. I also find the midbass resonance artifacts audible, albeit not disturbing.

For those who would admire a little more power from their ER4S and Smartphone (or iPhone / or PC)

I'm having quite good results with this little Cozoy Astrapi the past few hours.

While I feel Pono player offers a slight advantage overall SQ its questionable how much. More so, different characteristics served up. The Pono player can sound a little soft textured, not a bad sound. Astrapi on the other hand, sounds a little tighter, dryer which can carve out some aggression.

And about the separation, I could almost declare there were moments I felt Astrapi pulled away...

Cue the photo inside my dark dungeon.

I see you've gone back to the foamies - are the gliders out of favour or just too discoloured for the photo?

Haha! The original glider tips (1st set) expired, one side started to tear, I really think I could have got longer our of them, but switched to foam for a change. I feel foam gives better accuracy and possibly bite in detail if you're looking for detail hits. Gliders are a little laid back as thier extra comfort suggests.

Some days/nights the foam tips drive me crazy comfort wise, fits of laughter / semi pain... Why? Why did they do this? . :p

Anyone used the same pair of er4s for a decade? Does the sound change with that much burn in?

Balanced armature drivers normally dont require burn in or change with use, at least in my experience
