[Review] EQu parametric EQ for the iPodtouch/iPhone/iPad

The 4g Touch is by far the best sounding Apple DAP I've heard so far imo. I may sell the 601/SFlo2 because of it...

ive been using both equalizer and EQu for some time now, and started a thread hoping to help people become aware of them.

I too settled early on into using EQu b/c i found its parametric function surpased the band function of "equalizer"
i have been using EQu as my sole music listening app for nearly a month and find it invaluable to my music listening experience.
I often compare this to having my clip+ rockbox eq in terms of completely revolutionizing the quality of sound i can now get from my ipod due to custom eq settings for each pair of headphones i own.

i highly reccomend this app.  The creator is open to suggestions and I have exchanged emails with him a few times already.  He is in the process of updating the app with as many bug fixes, and new features as possible, and seems intent on continuing to do so.

this was the magic pill of custom eq that i had been waiting for on ipods for years!  wooh!!

Equalizer is more accurate and more in depth than EQu, but EQu is just a lot more practical and still solid.

did you mean that the other way around? if not please explain.. I always felt the opposite.. EQu.. with its parametric gives much finer detail control, and seems to work better all around too.

but i'd be happy to be proven wrong

Count me in as a believer in EQu

Got it this morning, and had to wait until tonight to really try it, and I love it! Well worth the $3....now the only advantage my Rockboxed Sansas have is their being cheap to replace.

coun't me in too :) I can now get a much more preferable sound into my Senns

amazing what a small reduction in bass so its not overbearing (could be my headphones but no matter it still needs EQing), and a slight uplift in mid, and slight downlift in upper trebble

and it sounds superb, possibly as good as my X-series Sony (which I never use these days, I just always have the Iphone 4 on me and can't be bothered with a 2nd device)

These comments hit the nail on the head. The iPhone 4 (and late-model Touch) is already a very good hardware platform with respect to SQ, and EQu completes the picture. It is now possible to have high-end personal audio capabilities in the smartphone that we all already carry, making a semi-exotic, semi-supported brand with limited 3rd-party software the odd man out. Those alternatives just don't buy you very much anymore (beyond the usual imaginary aristicratic audiophile appeal.) That's why I think this development will become a game-changer as the software matures and more people become aware of this option. My hat is tipped to the EQu authors for an excellent initial effort and I hope to see development continue. You will never spend a better 3 bucks on anything.

EQu is easier to tweak, but Equalizer gives you more options. The dynamic range is also less effected when using Equalizer compared to EQu. Still, EQu is better all-round because it's not far behind in accuracy anyways.

Once the headphone in-line control is fully supported I'll get onboard w/this. I need the ability to control my device while it's in my pocket, and that's the ONLY thing keeping me from spending $3 on this app. Once implemented - I'm there!!!

Yeah, hoping to see that fixed in the next release.

Those who use Equalizer.....are the 7 bands' frequencies permanent, or can we change them to what we want, like with EQu and Rockbox?

Well you have to factor in cost, as the Clip+ purchase price is approximately 1/2 of the minimum $75 monthly fee for the privilege of using an iPhone but if you are doing that anyways because you need a smartphone then it's a no-brainer. Also an iPod Touch as a player runs great software but costs at least 6x as much so there you go. This is coming from a guy with 5 or 6 iPods over the years (I still even use my 5GB 1G) and no other brand of player.

I have to use a smartphone anyways, so for me the cost is the same as always - but I get to carry one less item w/the iPhone, and that's a separate portable media player. I use my clip+ otherwise as the main music player, but my iPhone gets the most usage for tunes. If these great EQ apps can make the iPhone/touch sounds as good as my clip+ w/RB installed I'll be one happy camper, and it's seem joy will shortly be mine!!!

You can change the center frequency, the gain, and Q of each filter. You get seven of these:

It won't be as easy to visualize the overall response as with EQu. Equalizer is also only $3--low even for college students--and surely worth it if it means you won't have to continue worrying if you should have downloaded this one instead of EQu.
