It also depends on what quality your music files are for starters. full lossless or low quality mp3.
 
One possible fix is to turn up your iPod to 90%, then adjust the car volume.

I'm not using Lossless since it seems like it's such a pain. The songs I was referring to were purchased from iTunes, although I have since downloaded several versions of the song at various bitrates and all exhibit the same distortion. 
 
I have always had my volume turned up to 100% on the iPod, could that be the problem?
