PS1000 Impressions Thread

Joseph, don't sweat it Buddy, in my opinion you have every rights to think, and say, that the LCD-X are overpriced. HarleyZK said it himself, many people think that the PS1000 are overpriced, and I've seldom seen people rush to Grados defence. In fact, it's the opposite, one bad comment often triggers an avalanche of negative comments towards Grado.

You know me, I've always said that,  Audeze, Hi-Fi Man, Sennheiser, etc...all make very good sounding headphones, so I used to visit their threads, but at times there was so much hate directed towards Grado, that I got tired of it, and now, I only visit threads pertaining to The Dark Side.

The way I see it, saying that a pair of headphones is overpriced, is not like saying that they're garbage, or a piece of crap. It's ok to have a preference for a specific brand, as long as you can stay objective, and don't hesitate to crticize them when you don't agree with them on something. Speaking of wich, I've always said that I find it unacceptable that Grado is shipping their high end headphones in Pizza boxes, they definately should ship them in nice, permanent ones.

The RS1 used come in very nice wooden boxes, and at the time, they were selling for less than halph the price of the new PS1000e. If they were able to ship the $395 Bushmills-X, in wooden crates, with a clear plexi-glass cover, plus, a nicely embroided carrying bag, and still make some profit, I don't see why it would be different for the regular high end models.

Oh!, I just noticed that this post doesn't contain any of my usual humour...it's a bit gross, but I like it,  here we go, He who goes to sleep with an itchy arse, will wake up with stnky fingers!.

Alright, that's enough rambling for now.

Totally agree, at the headphone meets Grado usually gets the shaft. Most people aren't interested in listening, once they do a lot of the time they are surprised. I am surprised at the popularity of the Audeze. I guess a lot of people prefer a relaxed smooth sound(Boring to me).I have listened to them numerous times trying to like them and I am underwhelmed. I have always wanted to like them. They cost so much, there must be something great about them, but alas I can't find anything I really like about their sound. They are obviously well made and beautiful. They are a quality product, I just don't like them. That's ok. Grado just nails so much of everything I love about music. The instruments sound like they are supposed to and the texture and tonality for me is always right. I always get lost in the music and that is all I really care about. There are couple of things I wish Grado did better quality wise especially for the more expensive models but honestly, it doesn't matter to me though, if the sound is "right" for me I am going to buy it.

Sounds like a Grado, they all have a similar FR don't they?

Most of them do, but the PS500(e), have a significantly different FR curve.

Sorry for the dumb question, but which low end Grado(except PS500) comes closest to the PS1000 sound?
I just bought the HD800 so can't afford the PS1000, but would like to get a taste of it's sound.

Don't be sorry, we don`t mind answering dumb questions...just kidding!.

Seriously though, I have many Grados, that range from thae SR80e, to the PS1000, and in my opinion, none of the low end Grados sound like the PS1000, not even the PS500, wich have a rolled off treble, and a smaller soundstage, due to the smaller earpads.

I agree, and I think that the reason that people often don't just like, but actually love Grados, is because among other things, they get the midrange right. The mids contains the bulk of the musical informations. If the human voice, and most of the musical instruments's tone sound right. It's almost impossible not to love what you hear.

I'm happy that you agree with me, this means that I'm starting to make sense, even while I'm on the meds.

I've been taking this pain medication for so long, that they hardly have any effect anymore, oh well!.

My friend is a SCUBA diver and he thought me something today...do you guys know why SCUBA divers always throw themselves of the boat, backwards

So our masks stay on?

How close to the PS1000 are the PS500 with the PS1000 pads?

I've never tryed them myself. I could kick myself too, because before buying my PS1000, I had bought the PS500, and I didn't think of trying my GS1000's G-cush with the PS500.

You could do a search, say, PS500 with G-cush, and I'm sure you'll find something.

No sorry!, it's because, if the SCUBA diver throws himself forward, instead of backward, he'll fall face down in the boat.

Seriously though, I think you're right, it's so their masks will stay put, good guess.

Here is a little investigation I did of just that, a while ago:  http://www.head-fi.org/t/520884/ps1000-impressions-thread/1620#post_11463376

In short, I compared the PS500 with G CUSH (i.e., PS1000) pads to the PS1000.  PS500 without GCUSH had similar sound, except not the high frequency detail of the PS100.  It also had a smaller sound stage... putting on the G CUSH increased the sound stage toward that of the PS1000, but the instruments as heard on the PS500 still sounded closer, with discrete positions and little sound coming from spots between instruments.  With the PS1000, they were more naturally blended as you focused your attention around the sound stage.

And trying to get into the momentary spirit of this thread...

Why do seagulls fly toward the sea?

Oh, and putting on the G CUSH also gave the feeling of stronger treble on the PS500, again coming closer to the PS1000.

Here might be why:

We can place the frequency response, as measured by headroom.com, of the PS1000 on top of the PS500.  We see that the graphs lie almost on top of each other at lower frequencies.  However, the PS1000 (red) has stronger treble than the PS500 (blue).

Response of Grado PS500 (blue) matches that of the PS1000 (red) at frequencies up to 1 KHz, then drops below.

We can then try to extrapolate the effect of replacing the L bowls that the PS500 comes with with G CUSH as used on the PS1000.  To do this, we overlay a frequency plot from innerfidelity.com of the Grado SR225i with stock L bowls (green curve) with a plot from the same source of the SR225i with G CUSH (red (and blue) curve).

Changing from L on-ear pads (green) to G over-ear pads (red (R) and blue (L)) suppresses frequencies of 1 - 2 KHz and slightly boosts those of 5 - 8 KHz, somewhat compensating for the drop in PS500 frequencies vs. the PS1000.

A zoom-in view (blue box) colors the area of difference between the curves in yellow, and we see that the effect of changing the L bowls (green curve) to the G CUSH over ear pads (red and blue) is a suppression of frequencies around 2 KHz, where the red curve lies above the green,  and a boosting of frequencies around 5 KHz, where the red curve lies above the green.

If we believe that the same effect will occur when we replace stock L bowls with G CUSH on the PS500, we would imagine that the PS500 frequencies around 5 KHz will be brought up toward the PS1000 frequencies as a result of moving from the L to the G pads, but will exacerbate the already-low PS500 frequency response (as compared to the PS1000) around 2 KHz (whew... HOPE I got that right!).

Because if the seagulls flew toward the bay instead of toward the sea, they would be baygulls (bagles!)

Do the PS1000 have the same cable as the PS1000e?  Do they both have G Cush ear pads as stock pads?  After reading most of this thread these questions are not clear!

The PS1K has an 8 conductor cable and the (e) has a 12 conductor cable.

What exactly does that mean? Isn't that just extra copper wire around the core that's not connected to anything?

The more amount of conductor cable the less the resistance on each.

Congrats on your 4000th post!

so they are all connected?

So is it better to have a very thick copper cable?
