I have listened to the JH3A prototype at Can Jam and have one on order, but I do not consider it a portable rig.  Like the Solo transport/DAC it's way too big to be effectively carried around without the benefit of a CQC vest.  I also have a HM-801, and while the SQ is excellent with the JH13s or 16s, it's still a bit big to be carried in the pocket, although not impossible.  The new HM-602 is much better in size and a decent compromise overall but the final version isn't shipping yet, although very soon.

I see the JH3A to be an excellent desktop/work system if I can ever get a working OSX M2tech HiFace driver for my MacBook Pro.  The Solo is an interesting concept but where does it fit in the large scheme of things.  I'd really loathe to carry 2 components strapped together plus the IC, can't even imagine 3 of them.  That's 2 different ICs and up to three separate chargers.

For now I find myself using a WhipMOD/WhipLOD combo with a Pico Slim and a TWagged JH13 Pro for 16-bit/44 music and the HM-801 for 24/96.  Because of the thin form factor of the WhipMod and the Pico Slim that combo is very pocketable.  My 240GB iMod is now for sale.

Gym gear:  the new Nano paired directly with the TWagged JH16s sound mighty good.  Not as good as the WhipMOD/LOD/Slim combo, but for an ultraportable gear, not too shabby.

is the solo pic in the main website misleading on its actual size ? it looks like its barely bigger than a ipod touch *its fat* but length wise it is about the same. If true I could actually fit that easily in my pocket. I go to the gym with a phone samsung p3+ headstage arrow 12 se in the same pocket and a ath-es10  *other one is my huge wallet >_< and keys....  so I don't see why a jh3a+16 wouldn't work xD.

So what would you actually recommend ? I really want the jh3a+16 and I'm pretty sure its pocketableis from specs.  I use to carry around a psp in my pocket in highschool I don't see how I can't carry around a jh3a with a source. I might actually take your advice though and go with a much more portable source and get the m2tech+laptop or netbook for tranport.

Great post, thanks for all the very useful first-hand observations.  And as others have said, great thread ... I've just sold Shure 530s, an iMod, an ALO LOD, and a Predator.  You have helped me figure out how to spend the PayPal balance (before the wife does, on bedspreads or drapes or comforters, etc.  If you think, as stated in other threads, that portable amps and such are overpriced, try looking at high-end home fabrics.  OMG!  And this is just cloth, it does nothing, literally.)

warp - ygpm (or will in a moment).

For portable use, you are going to use a nano + JH-3A + JH16?

I fished out from my photo library some pictures made in Can Jam showing the JH-3A case as I was testing the only working prototype.  The guy behind me with a beard was the original designed, Matt Macbeth.  My understanding gained from a lengthy conversations with Jerry that the demo case exhibited there will be essentially the same to the production model in dimensions and other aspects.  Whether you consider that pocketable is up to you, but you need a high-quality source and interconnect as well to really push the JH-3A to its limits otherwise you may end up being source-constrained.
