For those which have heard both is there a clear winner? HE-6 / LCD 2

The Lyr works well. I never turn it up much higher than around 12 with the HE-6 and maybe 9 or 10 wit the LCD-2, so no problem with power. I very much like the LCD-2, so I hope it does not come across otherwise. MacedonianHero, was in fact an influencing factor on my decision. I am now saving for A Smyth Realiser. If I am forced to sell one pair in order to purchase it, I would likely sell the HE-6. I think the LCD-2 would do a better job in that application, but that is just conjecture. I find them similar, and both amazing. I don't think their will ever be a unanimous winner between these two cans, but  I always love hearing other peoples opinions, and I hope they keep coming.

I completely agree that both are truly world class headphones and you can't really go wrong with either one. I just happen to prefer the LCD-2s by a small margin. YMMV. I have yet to come across a "one size fits all" headphone that is universally loved and praised.

I guess I'm going to have to stop reading all these threads because I was set on buying T1's later this year but now I think the LCD-2's may be for me.  Between the HD800, T1, HE-6, and LCD-2 I have no idea which would best.  I've been listening to Beyer DT880/250 ohm cans for the past year and really like them but I know they are limited and I want to move to the next level.

I don't really have the option to go to a meet and listen to all the different models since I live on an isolated rock(GTMO).  I bought the DT880's after reading a lot of threads about them.  That is most likely what I will do for my next step up.  It's just a much more expensive step this time.

Save your money and keep the 880's. I am being half honest in saying that. I used to only listen to music on the go, with my SE310. At home I was using a pair of poor quality 20? year old AT headphones I took from my dad. I thought they were OK, but slightly uncomfortable. I started looking for new headphones, and a friend let me borrow his 770pros. They sounded so much better than what I had, and much more comfortable too. I found a decent deal on DT880/600 and bought them. I was so impressed.

That is when I joined Head-Fi. I thought the idea of spending $1000+ on headphones was crazy. I wanted T1's but never thought I would spend the money. Six months of me reading Head-Fi, and what happened. I bought the HE-6. I thought those would be my end all be all headphone. Well fast forward maybe two months. Oh wait, now I own the HE-6, LCD-2 and UM Miracles. I kind of wish I was still blissfully unaware of all of this. I loved the DT880, until I got the HE-6. I have since sold them.

Buy either pair and you will be very happy. If you end up with both, or all four, don't say I didn't warn you.

I can never decide which of my top headphones I like best. Usually it's the one that's on my head. But the HE-6 has been making some serious inroads lately since I added a tube stage to the SS speaker amp I am driving them with. They sound pretty good out of the Lyr as well, but that speaker amp setup is becoming a keeper.

HE-6 >> LCD-2

HE-6 presents music the way I like it.  It grabs you into it and doesn't let go.  The treble on this baby is the best I've heard and it just handles all genres so well.  I love how the midrange is so detailed and clean.  The LCD-2 is just too warm and has a creamy midrange that deepens voices and turns guitars into bass guitar...plus IMO treble makes music exciting, not bass.

HE-6 is like a fresh cold glass of whole milk - naturally sweet, smooth, and just plain good.  You can keep drinking it and never get tired of it.
LCD-2 is like a jar of honey - very sweet and thick.  Taste good when you get a little sample but gets disgusting when you eat a spoon full.

A lot like salty vs. sweet.  I was just never a big fan of sweets...

I can easily see where it could be a never ending cycle of buying bigger and better.

I keep myself on a very tight budget and usually buy one or two really nice things a year.  If I end up with all 4 of these phones over a couple of years that would be fine.  I don't really see it happening though.  If I find something I really like I tend to stick with it for a long time.  I also know that each of these phones would be easy to resell hear if I did not like them.  I try to buy from others here when I can.

There's some truth to this, but it's exaggerated. The HE-6 gives a more neutral presentation of the music in my opinion, but there are quite a few other headphones that do that. There's something special about the LCD-2 which makes it worth owning in my opinion, but not as your only pair of headphones. In other words, if I could own only one pair of headphones and I had to pick between the HE-6 and the LCD-2, I would pick the HE-6. However, if I already had a reasonably neutral pair of headphones, and I had to choose between the HE-6 and LCD-2 as a second pair, I would pick the LCD-2.

You have a point and as a student I can only afford one can for now, but even then I don't think I would ever want to own a pair of LCD-2s simply because it doesn't really work with any of the music I listen to...some maybe but I don't like a lot of bass slam...

I would say the amount of slam the HE-6 is perfect as it is.  I would say that the HD800 has sufficient slam, although I don't like the presentation of that can.  Everything feels too thin...which is why T1>>HD800

I'm leaning very heavily towards the HE-6 as I prefer a bit "brighter" sound as well.  I will probably drive them with the speaker outs of an old Kenwood receiver I own, for the time being anyway.  I wish I knew when Fang was going to introduce the HE-500 which is supposed to have the same tone, but is more efficient and thus easier to drive.  I know the prototype is out there.

Wow,
Just went through this thread and I am more undecided than before. I own the HE5-LE and want to try a pair of LCD-2's However, I really like my HE5-LE from the speaker taps of my MiniWatt.
So should I get the HE-6 or the LCD-2?

Or wait for the HE500 and HE600.

I heard the prototype HE500 and preferred it to the HE6.

What did you prefer about the HE500?

Yes, there's always something just a little bit better around the corner.  Or so we would like to believe.  At some point it is useful to declare a moritorium on buying equipment and spend a year just buying concert tickets and expanding your repertoire.  Guaranteed better return on investment!
