Eh wisemanja - long time no see! Where were you?

Well I had been unemployed since November 2012. In the Dallas, TX Area where we live most of the job positions that I am associated with were in the government contracting industry and you KNOW just how fast military spending has been expanding every since sequestration kicked in :)

Anyway, that is why I had so much time I was able to get back into my old hobby of audio. (Well, at least enough time to get all 120 of my albums pulled into my computer :)

I got hired on at GE Hitachi in Wilmington, NC. In the first part of October when I received the offer we had to blitz trying to get the house ready to sell (painting inside and out, clean all carpets, and achieve that prior to my coming out here in November). So now things have settled a bit. We're waiting for the house to sell in Dallas so we can buy something out here so I'm by myself in a rented room waiting for things to happen.

Of course the first thing I packed when I drove out here was my iMac, HDVD800, and T1 'phones! I didn't even have the sense to bring a bunch of my really warm clothes. Well, you know how priorities go...

thats great news and good to hear about the job. You were a very busy bee indeed. I have since gotten the HD800 and am enjoying them a lot. I have a Custom OTL on the way early next year so im looking forward to that. Good luck with the house sale.

I hope you guys can help me out here

I have T1  # 15193 and an Beyerdynamic A1 amp and a Graham slee solo. I have tried both amps and I have to max the volume up to the levels up to what would normally be 50%

100 % on both amps. Both are loud enough at max,

I always like a bit to spare. I never feel comfortable when there is nothing left to give :)

Do you think my sources are cutting it back ?

Any ideas.

This is possible. I had the Gamma2 which had a low Vrms (1.2 I think) which I think (no EE here, just saying what I think) correlates to lower volume (I could be wrong) bottom line is though, when I got the M1 DAC it was much much louder. Problem solved

Yeah, these puppies are somewhat high impedance and consequently require high voltage rails to get the power built up.  Some amps could simply rail out trying to drive these things to any reasonable amplitude.

OK. but you would think that the A1 was sorta built to compliment the  T1 ?? maybe its those ugly EU rules. hearing regs, etc ,.

so many rules, so much limited volume, so much lack of freedom to decide yourself ?

Can you explain what does VMRS mean to you ? To me in means root mean squared, which pretty much means average voltage ? Wattage is what counts. I get a bit confused.Ohms laws is  I (watts) = voltage divided by resistance. Impedance is a whole new ballgame. impedance varies according to resistance at a given time (phase) and will change with changes in load. This only happens in alternating currents i.e mains power (A.C.). In D.C  ( Direct .Current)  impedance and resistance are the same thing. as there no phase ( time) involved .

I hope that cleared things up for you guys, cause it didn't for me  !!
It's the same for home speakers. Mine are rated at  92 Db sensitivity at 8 Ohms, but the load on the amp swings way above and below the quoted rating of a speaker or headphone, to me its a bit weird. Your amp will give out what your speaker wants, and your speaker will tell your amp what to give it. It's all about resistive loads , etc. I remain clueless, maybe a University grad could simplify things.

I can only comment on my experiences with the gear I have. I first used my T1 with an older solid state Firestone Cute Beyond headphone amp and Endtech Number Cruncher dac. Listening to certain songs with pronounced cymbals, the cymbals came off very harsh. I could listen to music for extended amounts of times, I just had to avoid certain songs.

Using new gear, a Decware CSP2+ and a Meier Audio Stagedac, I've had more positive experiences. Using different sets of tubes have yielded different experiences.

Three 6N1P-EV and a Valve Art 274B rectifier; more pleasant sound than my solid state amp, no harshness with cymbals, no noticeable fatigue, listened for hours.

Three Sylvania JAN 6DJ8 and an RCA 5R4GY; greater sound stage than previous tubes, cymbals sounded more natural, no noticeable fatigue, listened for hours. This set of tubes made me want to keep listening to music.

Three different 6N1P-EV and a Tung Sol 5AU4 rectifier; much less sound stage than previous set, more lower end. Listening to some King Diamond, I like metal music, it almost seemed a bit bright when he would sing really high notes. Did not hear this with both previous set of tubes. Will give this set some time, the rectifier is brand new.

My CSP2+ headphone amp with a good set of tubes and my T1 is a great experience. The only thing stopping me from listening to music would be needing sleep for work the next day or the Sun coming up on the weekends.

Ya cymbals that is what I am worried about :) Thanks for the input BTW

My answer is both yes and no I find it depends on what type of music listened too. A combination that improved this aspect  for me was pairing the T1's with a Bottlehead Crack not only did they sound superb but listening for longer periods was not fatiguing like it before. In fact quiet the opposite you just want to keep feeding them track after track.

I am also interested in getting Bottlehead Crack but unfortunately I don't have knowledge in DIY.... Hmm what other amp have you tried with T1?

We are not dealing with DC, so it's really about the impedances. But the point is that there are different kind of amp designs. Some drive current into a load, some drive voltage. Either way, if the headphone impedance is high you need plenty of voltage for sufficient power still follows our favorite ohm's law P=V^2 / R.  Except here R is impedance and I am simplifying things a lot, but the idea exactly the same.  For example, if you need P=1W and your R=1ohm then you'll get V=1volt.  Raise that R ten times, and you'll need your V=3.16V for the same amount of power.  You get the point.

Because all amplifiers draw power from a fixed DC supply, their voltage output is usually limited to the range of that DC supplied (actually a little bit less).  So if the output need V=3.16 for the 1W of output, but the supplies are limited then you will limit your output power, or worse create distortion if the amplifier clips. We care about peak voltages here, not just RMS, because we don't want to clip our amplifiers.

It's a lot more complicated than this I am sure, but that's it in a nutshell.

at last, I was able to make a decision about which amp to get for my new T1s- just ordered a Violectric V200

I think the V200 is a more versatile amp regarding possible future headphones (I have an eye on the LCD-X  )

waiting for Santa now... :)

The other thing about the cable though, is that it is perfectly ready for an XLR swap! It's very easy with this cable, and I've seen a few people do it. But oddly enough (IMO at least) there's just no talk about the T1 with any balanced amps. I've been curious about trying balanced for a while, but I don't want to jump in without some ideas and opinions to start from, haha.
