I got a question here, I am looking to buy a headphone for a long time now. And my choices are between the Audio Technica W1000X and the Denon D7000. But lately I've seen that the Beyerdynamic T1 is priced the same as the Denon D7000, even a bit cheaper. (D7000 for €850, T1 for €819)

I had the At W1000X and D7000 and much preferred my D7000  over the AT just sounded better IMO. I own the T1,D7000 and have owned every flagship except Stax. I love both the T1 and D7000. One is closed and one is open. The T1 has more transparency better detail and super spacial imaging . The D7000 has more bass impact and is closed but isolation is not as good except my family tells me they don't hear any music when they watch TV and I have them on. Both keep me smiling  and they are the only two headphones I bought twice and are permanent residents. The HE500 is similar to the D7000 signature and open with better bass and transparency but do fall short to both my dynamic in spacial imaging and sound stage.

There were actually some minor change with different production period of T1. Friend's 1xxx has more rigid and hard head band, less maneuverable length adjustable part.

My first pair had the older headband and this one has the newer  one and more comfortable one. Sonically none I could hear.

I also did see that there are two different models

If you look at the headband, it has the beyerdynamic logo, throughout the headband, whereas the new doesn't (Only at the toP). The only thing I'm wondering is that if the driver ever looked like that?

#6506 signing in!

Just got mine 3 hours ago and what can I say, I've listened non-stop even after an 11-hour shift at work. I'm stunned! They are beyond all expectations. Enough said.

glad you're enjoying them!

Yes the T1 is a far better headphone. The D7000 is very nice but not high-end by any means. It is quite a mid-fi headphone and not nearly as resolving, transparent, or accurate as the T1 is. Not that the D7000 is bad as I really like the way they present the music but I feel they should only be valued at about $500USD just based on their performance alone. The T1 however performs better than it's price tag of $1,295USD. The T1 is a much better headphone, oh but I already said that.

The D7000's have a warmer signature and a slightly rolled treble and fuller bass response. I personally think it's soundstage is good for a closed headphone, but still sounds closed in. This headphone IMO is really good for rock, metal, rap, and other bass heavy genres. I think the amount of bass the D7000 has is overstated by many people. They are bass oriented but not like it's thunderous or overpowering. They excel at deep bass, something the T1 does well but they also roll them off a bit.

The T1 is largely neutral in it's presentation but has a slight hint of warmth in the midrange accompanied buy slightly rolled bass and treble. The rolled bass and treble as a "naturalness" to it's sound signature that many headphones can not pull off. An example to use would be the HD800. Many discribe the HD800 as a very antural sounding headphone but I say it is not. The whole sound is artificial to me with the soundstage and tilted treble. The T1 does none of this and since it's soundstage is smaller, the sound itself sounds more convincing to my ears. The T1 itself is great for most genre's but for rap I would say it isn't.

The W1000X is quite different from both. It's very warm sounding and is still mid-fi just as the D7000 was. The main thing is that the W1000X is a lush sounding headphone with a tad more treble than the D7000. It's bass isn't something that goes well with most genre's as it's quite lite. I would say maybe a bit less than T1 bass levels, but it's been a long time since I've heard the W1000X so my memory may be failing me. The soundstage is better than the D7000 from memory and it's imaging is good as well.

My question is if the T1 is really a significant upgrade compared to the other two headphones. And my only problem that prevents me from buying this headphone is that I don't have a amp or DAC to drive this at the moment, and probably will not be able to for a couple of months, whereas the other headphones are much easier to drive. I only got a COWON J3 MP3 player at the moment.

Any suggestions?

PS: Don't worry, for the time being I will buy a 1/4 to 1/8 jack

I disagree with your assessment of the D7000. When I think mid fi I think Beyer 770 600,880.amd the 701 and the D7000 stomps all of them and by a wide margin in refinement and never sounds closed in for a closed can. 770 is more so and the sound provided by the Denon is well above the others mentioned in refinement. The T1 steps it up but really at 1295.00 is not worth that price as neither are any headphone IMO but the D7000 is a step up over those cans I mentioned including the W1000X I had and sold. As for the closed can its a can I use when I dont want to bother people with music which the T1 being open does. So there is a place for it in my house maybe others will feel different but no way would I consider the HD600,701,880,770,W1000X,840 etc. The refinement is so much better and I paid much  less for both my T1 and D7000 new. so when is list really list. IMO the D7000s are knocking on the door of "high end" but fall just short while the T1s are well and truly entrenched in that standard.

The D7000s isolate horrendously for a closed phone and they leak more sound than all the open cans I've owned.

I agree with the leakage but a levels I listen too even though I can hear outside my family cannot hear the music as they can with my T1 or HE500 which leaks more than the T1 so for me it fits a purpose and still thin  they are better than the cans I mentioned previously. I relate the T1 to my Stratus Gold Speakers a 2K speakers back in 1994 that was  spectacular but not my Revel F30 but still pretty satisfactory but at less money, The D7000 reminds me of that sound signature and its still one of my favorites. Much more refined than my Beyer 770 and not as good as my other two but still has a place at least for me. The 770 isolate better though but like I said the music in my family room at my level of listening cannot be heard by the family and for me its important now if I dont want to hear them at all then I need to use my IEM or 770

Frankly I don't even know why sound leakage would be taken into consideration with the D700 since it comes with a quarter inch adapter, meaning that it's meant to be plugged into some serious sources-- of which, probably aren't mobile.

I don't know man. I find the beyers to be much better across the board when compared to the D7000. The D7000 sounds great but not much better than the D2000 and D5000 in all reality. The main thing is the the bass is no longer a fart canon and is a lit better controlled. I just don't hear anything high-end from them. They sound slower than my beyers but they are warmer which I like. If they were to be a high-end can then I would say their sound is mediocre at best for being high-end. For $1,000 they sound like poo to me and I could never drop that much on them. My max for them would be $500.

Then again guys this is my honest opinion of them. I just find the D2000-D7000 to be largely over priced for how they perform. I'd take a DT770 over any of them any day.

Thats why everyone is different but the 770 I have get used by my 15 yr old daughter now because it did not compete with my D7000 and remember I am a Beyer fan

To me, the Denon D7000's sound like a laid-back, full-range speaker system on my ears. That is very appealing. Correct, they do not have quite the transparency, balance, and speed of the Beyers. But the sheer hard to define 'musicality' factor-- the Denons keep making me happy. Again, in terms of musical satisfaction-- I think they belong in the top of the heap. At this point, it comes down to subtle sonic preference, IMO.

The Beyers too, if I want a more accurate or rigorous sound. I still think the Beyers tip the top end up just a bit however, like the Denons tip the low end up just a bit.

Refer to a previous thread on how long shall a the high fidelity headphones run, when doing some blind test on caps, I've found my friends T1 (ran for 300 hrs), comparing to mine (150 hs) has a noticably better sound stage and bass which allow me to discern the differences between RIFA and ELNA caps.

Result: more expensive RIFA has a better high/bass extension and a fuller sound.

Also, on neutrality and accurate representation, ADA4627 beats OPA627 like cr@p. OPA2111/111 are good as SSD tube simulator tho.
