Also, where do you find these wooden cups?

Mine look completely stock. I only modified the inside and the drivers.

If you want a full blown mod, then you can either make the wood cups yourself or you can order from Smeggy.

Would the weight of the wood or anything like that improve the sound any?

Depends who you ask.....

The best thing to do would be to attend a meet where you can listen to them for yourself and then come to an informed decision.

The difference between various hardwoods would likely be pretty small if anything.

If you want to make sure, though, there's always Lignum Vitae.

Lignum would be key in making a rastafied pair of Thunderpants, since it is the Jamaican national flower

food for thought..?

How would these sound straight out of my laptop's Realtek integrated sound card or iPhone 3GS? I understand that an amp would make it sound better but if it at least sounds better than my Audio-Technica M50 unamped I can hold off getting an amp for the time being.

Heya fellow Thunderpantsers,  just checking in as I'm still deciding on whether to upgrade my amp (currently a CTH, one of the first, which has had some issues occasionally cutting out entirely (until I lower the volume) because of that annoying E12 protection circuit) and my rapidly aging E-mu 0404 USB DAC which I've known for awhile is in dire need of a replacement.

In terms of upgrade options for these two pieces of gear, on the amp side I'd considered another hybrid, perhaps the Lyr.  Any TP owners care to comment on their experience driving the TPants with the Lyr?  On the DAC side, I'm inclined to go with the Bifrost if I end up going the Lyr route just to keep my DAC & Amp within the Schiit family, but there are so many good, reasonably affordable DAC options out there at the moment that I'm struggling to decide on one.  I know Smeggy uses a Pico DAC and seems more than happy with the job its done so I've done some looking at that, but I'd mostly like to hear from fellow TP owners who are happy with the synergy they've found in their setups.  On that note, anyone have any reasonably affordable (IE, <$600ish) DAC (or Amp/DAC) recommendations (must have USB to connect to my laptop running foobar) that in your opinion do justice to our TPants?  Many thanks in advance!

I probably shouldnt comment b/c i havent heard any of the amps/dacs that you are mentioning accept the CTH, but...

The CTH is a damn fine amp... Cavalli's in general are superb amps, and are known to greatly outperform their price range.  The CTH beat out 3 others in my 4 amp showdown, one of which was a hifiman ef-5 (another tube hybrid designed to drive orthos) which retails for twice the price of a CTH.

I would not be surprised if the CTH outperformed the LYR.. though again, i dont know..   i would be more inclined to have the CTH worked on , and concentrate on the dac.  there are so many good cheap dacs out right now.. more than ever.

just my 1 cent.

I've got the Lyr :)  And soon adding to the family, a Bifrost. The lyr drives my TP the best of any amp i've owned (probably cuz its the best amp ive owned)  but i havent heard a CTH. The lyr with the TP is definitely not dark (well depending on tube), and i find it transparent, which gets rid of a bit of the stuffiness ive experienced with the tp before. The lyr is not dark with the TP but really balanced i feel while keeping that thunderpant bass response :)  Depending on the tube the detail can be insane! i feel it will be even more-so when the bifrost gets here :)   I think i would call the lyr tp combo just clean meaty sound.

wish i could hear a cth sometime!

I dont think you could go wrong with a lyr since its such a great built amp with great service and warranty...  not a fanboy here, so do your research! the lyr might not be your answer but it is good.

Anybody else have a lyr TP combo and find anything similar to me?    * My TP's are NOT Smeggy made, they are in house by me *  My specs are all up to his original designs and i've damped them to my liking via sachu's transpore tape model of covering each corner square with tape. and bits of felt in choice places inside the cup.

Can anyone comment on the sound differences between the D2000's and the TP's?  Are the mids more prominent in the TP's?  Is the soundstaging about the same?

denon d2000's? well for one thing the TP's sound WAY better all around.
d2000's are a very laid back sounding headphone (not necessarily a bad thing) so in that sense the mids are less forward, but thats not to say TP's have forward mids...
the denons have some serious frequency imbalances, and sibilance from my experience.
they have sloppy bass, and their mids are nothing to write home about.  the highs are sibilant and also not so great either.  When i reviewed them i made the point of saying that unless you are ready to seriously EQ them that i wouldnt recommend them at all..

honesly,  Its not fair to the Denons to be compared to a headphone so superior.  They are simply in 2 very different classes of headphone.  Entry level, vs. arguably the best around.

Thunderpants featured on Gizmodo

I bet it will be a little pricey for most, and won't overextend Smeggy. Usually when Gizmodo features a product, the company is drowned with orders. If you were thinking about pulling the trigger, do it now!
