Thanks for posting the link, Trapper. FYI, according to the website the Sonia II are out of stock until end of March.

@Eric: Listened to the N3s all evening, they are definitely growing on me, but I still miss the airiness of the open models. Cable is better than the N1's though.

The EQ on my Clip+ frankly sucks badly (well, they are working on Rockbox from what I understand) but I think I'll give a shot at N1, Sonia (when it is in stock again) and XM1/XM2 if I can get a deal (like e.g., free shipping across the border

Emailed the seller, he told me he would get an all new batch with some new highlights at the end of the month. Figured I'd wait and see what he gets

Playaz N1 (paid $30, price varies subject to sellers whim)

Even though I've contacted Thomas (the seller) a few times, I'm not affiliated with him and have no control over his pricing. But I recommend contacting him via email if you're interested, he's given some crazy discounts and/or thrown in some free IEMs in the past.

Yea, I'm not having the same effect from the N1s that you did @ James. Not yet anyway. In all fairness, I've spent more time with the N3 (which includes giving them over 30 hours of burn in time already). I also made the mistake and hooked the N1 to my Fiio E1 portable amp, which totally took away the bass, but enhanced the mids twofold. So I need to burn in the N1 and not hook it up to that amp anyway. The N3 sounded wonderful going through the amp, but I think it has more bass than the N1 and of course it's much bigger. The Playaz are proving to be the better of the entire series over the Xears, but I still love the big sound coming out of those tiny Xm1 and Xm2. Just need to get a good seal with those tiny drivers. Yes, the N3 is made better.

The Sonias are out of stock because Playaz is releasing a new phone at the end of the month called the Revolution 2, it's supposedly similar to the Sonia but is made of wood and aluminum. That is what Thomas told me over email and he also said that the prototype was a very high end sounding product. I'm going to the wait until the end of the month and then jump on either the N3 or the Revolution 2.

Here's the Store Stonyboys, you can contact him form there.

Eric, I'm afraid this may be bad news for you: I bought a Sony A845 yesterday and while it is a stunning piece of engineering and complements my 1601s perfectly, the EQ is rather basic. I auditioned other current Sony models too and they all had the same EQ (clear bass + 5 bands).

Long story short, I cannot get the Playaz N1 and Sonia II sound decently with the Sony, like with the Cowon or rockboxed Fuze. For starters the bass is still too much on lowest setting (ok, maybe not for you

), but more severely the highs do have noticably less quality and cymbals sound quite coarse. I believe the explanation why you're not having the same effect from the N1s is very likely your source, sorry to say.

James that very well may be the problem. What helps the cut the bass some (although no equalizer) is the Fiio E1 straight into the Nano with the N3. The N3 sounds wonderful through my uDAc and equalizing through iTunes, which has a more expansive eq-ing system. I have yet to try the N1 with the uDAC, but I will try that soon. Yes, I've been pretty underwhelmed by the N1, but I haven't given up on it yet. I think many head-fiers don't realize they have to give these IEMs time to shine, especially the dynamics. My black Fiio E5 finally arrived at the Post Office today (after ordering in December) so I'm curious what it will do. People criticize these cheap amps without ever hearing them, but the E1 has been wonderful. Thanks for the insights @ James, sir.

^ Hey, I have a black Fiio E5 too and don't think it's bad for the price. But the included interconnect cable doesn't do it justice, use a better/thicker one if available. Just my 2c. Have fun! James.
