Yep, I was a holdout on Apple players due to the lack of custom EQ until I finally succumbed to the Touch. But I'm still praying for the day Apple decides that we are adult enough to select our own EQ settings.

I was against buying an iPod too until I traded my ZV:M in for a 5.5G because I needed more space.

The whole custom EQ thing is confusing...Apple can make the kick-ass iPhone yet they fall short with a simple feature.

I hope this trick works for real but if it does I must have done it wrong.

It doesn't work, period. Alas we are all still at the mercy of the Apple Computer Marketing Dept...

For me, I love everything about ipods except the custom eq. Rockbox was perfect for my 5.5g but I don't have that luxury since I have 6G now.

You are correct, sir:

Apple Marketing confirms the procedure mentioned above actually
triggers one of Apple's new Psychotropic Algorithms.

The alogrithm establishes a "Reality Distortion Field" in your inner ear.

The net effect is that you believe the EQ is changing, when it isn't.

Well, don't feel bad... that ol' Reality Distortion Field effect is pretty common and also shows up whenever cables, bitrates, etc., are discussed.

N.B.: my "Reality Distortion Field" comment was Tongue-in-Cheek.

This EQ procedure works - my ears tell me that - Apple tells me that - several Head-Fi members, whose judgment I've come to respect, tell me that.

Don't know why some here can't get it to work for them.

an employee at the apple store told you that. I'm willing to be that many of the people here at head-fi know more about the ipod than the employees at an apple store (regarding the internals - store employees probably have more knowledge of accessorizing). there is only one other member in this thread who claims it worked and (no offense) that member is not a very senior member.

have you tried what people have suggested? applying a horribly skewed EQ should be a straightforward method to say if this does or does not work.

No offense taken.
Best idea I've got at this point, is to check with some senior Apple technical folks - haven't gotten around to that yet. That may be the only way to put this to rest, once and for all.

However, I have tried major & minor EQ changes with this technique (using iTunes 8, Mac G5, 4G Nano, 3G Nano, Tomahawk, Mustang, SR325i's, W3's, SE530's, PK2's, ER4P's) - and my ears can hear the difference (or at least, my brain perceives a difference)
