The rationale of using tubey amp on ER-4S is to warm it up a bit. I have paired ER-4S with a bright sounding source like the Benchmark DAC1 + Heed CANAMP and I have to admit I think they are too bright for my taste. So building up synergy is not about piling up rig which has similar characteristic. It's a about match making of gears that have different attributes that blend in together. Same like the Senns, if you match them with tubey amp, they tend to get darker. Like Grados, they synergize well with Millet tubes because they are as bright sounding as the ER-4S. Same goes for DT990.

The strength of ER-4S is still about getting that pristine precision like no other IEM can offer, and a little warming up will actually balance out the entire spectrum and make them utterly neutral sounding - read: Stock ER-4S is colored in the highs.

So now with the recommendations for the move so high does that also include the 2/3move? I would love to try the Millet Hybrid but I can't justify 459 freaking dollars....

All Moves have the same amp circuitry. Meaning that, any version is as good as the other. The difference between 1 and 2 is the dac chip. Move 2 has a better DAC chip. Move 3 is a aesthetic revision of the Move 2.

OH! That was a brave comment.

--> oh,btw I agree with that other stuff too. I love my Pico but the itch to buy another amp got the best of me so I have an XM5 on the way and tonight decided to burn some more $ and ordered a T4...yeah, wth, why not. Of course these will be tested with ER4P.

Agree with EFN's post about synergy - although I love the detail/clarity of the ER4P, pairing it with a "tubier" portable amp made the sound complete for me, moreso than when I was using a headsix.

Has anyone that's posted here tried the er4 with the new RSA P-51 mustang?

I'm wondering how it would compare to the 2move with regards to mellowing out the er4 out a little bit.

I sold my ER-4S a few months ago in favor of my TF10s. At the time, my two portable amps were a Tomahawk and a Headsix (I still actually own both). While the TH had the muscle to drive the 4S, it wasn't a great combination. The Headsix, on the other hand, was fantastic. It has a nice warm sound that pairs nicely with the Etys and plenty of power to drive them.

I had only one issue with the Headsix and the Etys. To me, the combo sounded better on high gain but the pot is such that the volume was just about as high as I would have wanted it just as the channels matched. Didn't leave a whole lot of leeway to adjust volume but it was never a huge problem.

p51 sound very forward and fast with my er4s. it's just too fast. my p51 only has around 10 hours and i only tried it with er4s once with some jazz music.

ER4S/ER4P... I would recommend using them unamped, right out of your portable player!

I have both the P-51(100+ hrs burn-in) and 2Move. To my ear, the 2Move gives the ER4S a larger sound compared to my P-51. Though both have good bass, the 2Move has more punch with the same definition to that of the P-51 when driving the ER4S. It also smoothens out the sound of the ER4S more than the P-51, while retaining clarity. What the P-51 has over the 2Move powering the ER4S is a little better instrument separation. This is probably due to the fact that the 2Move presents music closer compared to the P-51. Now, pluging a 12v adapter to the 2Move takes it up another notch.

Driving my FreqShow the P-51 is ahead of the 2Move.

1. TTVJ Portable Millet - absolute euphonic winner, miles ahead of the rest, hours of pleasure and relaxation.

2. Meier Move - tubey sounding nice mids, unique combo of warmth and clarity, punchy bass, smooth and extended highs, excellent soundstaging.

And then the rest:

3. Pico - absolute neutrality, perfect reference combo (for tests, etc.).
4. XIN Supermicro IV - sense of presence, natural voices.
5. Fiio E3 - incredible value, makes ER-4S relaxed, warm and forgiving.

I agree that the TTJV Portable Millet sounds superb with the ER-4S. I had the loaner for two weeks and hated to send it back. I hope the poster is correct as I just ordered a 3Move over the TTVJ amp, hoping it will sound much better than my current portable amp, as it gave me enough extra to order K-701's as well.

I actually wasn't a huge Headsix/Ety fan. It didn't sound bad, but I really didn't feel like I was getting a significant difference in the sound at all with that combo.
