The Electro Harmonix is pretty good (it's also a stock tube on the Cary CAD 300SEI, IIRC). It's only when you compare it to good NOS that you hear a loss in fine detail. Still, it's got a nice tonal balance, which many new stock tubes miss completely.

hirsch,

you know me. i'm not that much of a detail person. i'm a tone person.

I may try this same tube setup when I finally get the supra Ive been anxiously awaiting.

KShaft,

keep in mind my sony DVD/SACD/CD player is a little on the bright side. so are my wireworld ICs. and i'm also using the beyer DT-880s.

my tube set up *may* be a bit too lush when using the HD600.

Thanks you have a nice setup. How do you find the chassis build quality with the CPX? Is it still flimsy, or has he upped the ga. of the sheetmetal? I read that the chassis flexes when installing tubes. Are these well built and reliable amps?

How much does the CPX go for.

You should check with Mikhail on price (info@singlepower.com).

I haven't found either the CPX3 or the MPX3 to be flimsy at all. I find them both to be reliable and extremely well built.

I'm not sure if there are any other CPX3's out there. I bought mine at the May NY meet from Mikhail. Unfortunately, since I bought the MPX3 I don't use it all that often, but it does compare favorably. It's warmer but not as detailed as the MPX3.

my MPX3 is very well built. the chassis doesn’t flex when installing tubes (although it IS a little tough getting the tubes in and out of their sockets). even the side of the unit where the headphone plugs in is solid. no flexing there, either.

Im still seeing which one I want. Wadia 830, SCD-1, xa777es, krell...etc... choices choices!

On thing I did nit-pick about when I auditioned the MPX3 at the Grado meet, was that the volume pot was not consistent in its volume changes throughout its rotation. I do not know what pot is used on this model, but I did mention this to Mikhail at the time. No one else seemed to notice or mention this though, I think, but it kinda bugged me.

That was an early production unit, IIRC. My unit doesn't seem to have this issue.

pigmode, the amp that Mikhail is building for me has been internaly braced and he says it's super strong. No flex at all.
jpelg, My amp is coming with a Goldpoint Stepped Attenuator, so I imagine you could get one built with whatever pot you wanted in one.
Mikhail is very easy to deal with and has worked with me on building a custom Supra. He's gone out of his way to find parts and tubes for me. I've read here about people wondering about QC, but he's got quite a few amps out there now and I have not heard of any of them breaking down yet. Considering the time and quality of parts he's putting into my amp I feel I got a great deal.

Generally, I prefer the MPX3. It's a bit more detailed and controlls the bass better than the CPX3. However, they are pretty close, and if I had to live with only the CPX3 I would be very happy.

Hi all:

The comments here and in Tuberoller's review certainly echo what I heard from the MPX3 at the CA meet. The sound is just so damned involving. Can't wait to get mine in a few days.

i noticed a very slight hum on my MPX3 that has not gone away with break-in. a tube amp with a little hum is to be expected. but the hum on my amp seems to come from the left channel only. it's only noticeable during silence between tracks or when there's no music playing. so it's no dig deal at all. but the fact that the hum is only coming from *one channel* has me a bit concerned.

i have determined that it's not the tubes. also, with the huge box the MPX3 shipped in, i cannot imagine there was damage during shipping.

do the other MPX3 owners hear this humming from the left channel? is this just part of the design? or is it my unit?

The first MPX3 that I bought had a hum, but it was in both channels. I got a replacement and haven't noticed a hum. I would contact Mikhail.
