I forgot to mention. Art Dudley, in a recent 'Listener', was commenting on the Internet review sites. He did not think very highly of the wannabe reviewers in general.

I have to admit; there are few that do describe accurately a product. But I get very suspicious when I see the full 5 stars on a mass produced device or only 1 star on a high end one. Overall, many products are overrated, like the V900. Yes, I got sucked in for those and I have been laughing at the reviews.

I just read that review, and it HAS to be a joke. I can't imagine someone writing that!

I usually just pay attention to how people describe build quality when i read reviews on audioreview. Sometimes you can tell when a person really knows audio by how they write their review, but most of the time the people writing the reviews know next to nothing.

I suppose it depends on who is doing the rating. Is it a young kid using MP3 with bass boost on, or is it someone with trained ears using a good source? Is the 5 star rating of a lousy Sony done by someone who's heard the Orpheus or someone who's just replaced the crap phones that came with his $10 walkman? It's all context, so the "Similar equipment used" becomes a possible key factor in determining the credibility of the "reviewer". Some simply trash a product because they think they paid too much money for it

I think the only things you can look for are some sort of consistencies, a common comment about a certain headphone. If it sounds like something you'd like, go demo it. If you already own the product and love it, enjoy the good reviews and ignore the "bad".

At AudioREVIEW, those recent one- and two-star reviews of the Sennheiser HD 580's get summed up like this:

'Eeeeew, they sound like ****!' - Piece-of-Crap Sony Owner 'Dude, you have the wrong cable on.' - HD 580 Owner.

As I said, Audio Asylum's database is great, but their browsing system is a complete joke for a site of their caliber.

I'm a regular at Audio review and I think you guys would all be an asset to that forum. A lot of begginers go there and are continually bullied by the extreme objectivists. Objectivism to a rational level is one thing, but too much of a good thing can end up missing the point of the entire audio exercise.

The All amps are the same...but I never actually said it, diatribe is frustrating. All CD players are the same because you can't prove they don't sound the same in some DBT written 2 years before cd players came out. This is the kind of bickering that always goes on if you try and recommend a componant.

I try and fight them with this good one...Take your headphones and plug them into a receiver or integrated amp that has a direct button...listen to your headphones with direct off and then push the direct on...you should hear some of the hiss go away...at the very least...now if the direct button alone makes this significant level of difference then so too should an amp. Audibly, direct and non direct simply bypass the preamp and DSP modes of the unit...since objectivist claim that even cheap amps are transparent...then a couple of switches should MAKE NO DIFFERENCE in sound...yet one need not be an audiohile or Golden EAR to hear this interesting phenomenon.

Brand loyalty is something that bugs me, people assume that beacuse X company once made the best X product then all their other products must be the best too.
Sony are the biggest target for this attitude, I have to constantly explain to people that just because something has Sony written on it somewhere - it doesn't instantly make it the best.
Televisions are a great example, people look at me blankly when I tell them I have a Loewe. They also look at me blankly when I tell them I have Beyerdynamic headphones and they look at me blankly when I tell them I have a Plextor burner. Then they sprout off how they saw the latest 'top of the range' Sony thingumyjig at their local mass-market consumer store and how it was amazing.
Then they see my TV or listen to my headphones and it's like opening a door to a whole new world for them - the world of alternatives to huge mass-market brand names...

I love spreading the gospel of wider choice

Here's some quotes I've endured;
"Sennheiser? never heard of them, I have a pair of Sony MDR-V700DJ headphones and they're the BEST!!!!!!!!!"
"Parasound? who are they.. I got the BEST Sony amp on the market, the guy at the shop told me it was top-of-the-range" (I then told him about Krell "it's HOW BIG?" (I hear that a lot))

I'm currently in the process of educating a couple of people in regards to why someone would spend $500 on headphones when the earbuds that come with their Sony MD player sound "awesome". Wish me luck!

I once added a review to AudioReview for the HD570s. If anyone can find it, I'll give you a dollar.

In the mean time.. Laugh at this poor fellow:

My friend needed a place to stay, so I let him use the basement. Well I work late and when I come home I like to crank the stereo. To keep the peace, he let me use his headphones 570's. So I used them one day when I got home. I listened to every heavy metal song in my collection for nine straight hours. I could make out the words from songs that previously I could not discern from my loudspeakers, which are fairly good quality. As well, these sound the best when the stereo is set to dolby V mode. With the volume as loud as I could handle, my ears barely rang after. I found the bass to be very good, but the clarity of hearing vocals is what makes these headphones impressive. The highs are a little harsh, but then I have my treble set to full, so I have only myself to blame.
Now, when I come home late at night, I look forward to putting these phones on without worrying if I'm knocking the plaster off the neighbor's walls.
I listened to a wide variety of music and am not disappointed at all by the bass or treble response.
Since I haven't tried other headphones I'm only rating these a four, but they could very well be a five.

Xander... I think your review is dated 9/13/01 - and it's the only review giving those HD 570s two stars (not one star). It mentioned the Sony MDR-CD380s as one of the "Similar Products Used".

I have just visited AudioREVIEW a minute ago, and Thank God someone at AudioREVIEW (the editor, not the reviewers) had removed all of those one- and two-star reviews of those audiophile headphones!! Some of the affected models are the AKG K501, Grado RS-1, SR-125 and SR-225, Sennheiser HD-580 and HD-600, and Sony MDR-CD3000. Also, recent reviews giving the Sony MDR-V6 and Sennheiser MX-500 one star and those crappy Sony MDR-V300 and MDR-V600 headphones five stars had also been removed from the site!

Which means one thing: Someone has decided to moderate those reviews.

its about freaking time, as a owner of the 7506's you cant imagine how times i cringe when i read idiots reviewing them and giving them poor grades under the V6 link thinking its also for the V600's.
