how thick is the Senn driver cover? would changing it to one which is 1/2 the size correct some of the problems and give a better compromise.

Zeplin,

please elucidate the differences which you have come to appreciate.

So the first step is done: you're beginning to like it!

What source do you use now? Your Yamaha CDP, and your Yamaha receiver as amp? Maybe this is the cause for the brighness and the lean bass? AFAIK the Meta42 has a quite strong bass and would beat your receiver, not only in this area. But the question is also: how does your CDP sound?...

I think i am gonna put the pads in sorry jazz but the senns are so bright i need sunglasses to wear them.

That's not the case with me. Different setup, different perception? BTW you can play with the absorbing properties of the fabric to cover the drivers instead of the foam pads (which are ~3 mm thick, wallijonn). So you can achieve every sonic balance you want. Even a thin nylon gauze or pantyhose makes a difference. Of course you can swap the HD 600 to an SR-325, but then you possibly have a headphone which suits mediocre sources/amps best. But maybe it's nevertheless the right choice if you prefer a punchy, forward presentation to a refined one and can live with the colorations.

I performed the same mod on my 580s several months ago, but replaced teh foam with this nylon fabric that I purchased. I had planned to experiment with different fabrics, but one of the first ones I tried seemed to do the trick well.

I did the mod on my 580 a few months back as well. I was surprised at all the details, the foward presentation etc...But in the end, the foamless 580 sounded thin, and had lost a lot of the "Sennheiser sound" so I put the foam back.
