Getting a GS-X
Jan 31, 2008 at 4:53 PM Post #31 of 95
just got my gs-x this morning and i've been listening to some of my favorite test tracks using a pair of darth beyers and pico as dac/preamp. only SE for now as all my balanced stuff (DAC, cables, etc.) are presently being built.

the first impression is one of nostalgia. what i remember fondly about the GS-1 oozes forth from the gs-x. i don't know if the gs-x is any better than what i remember about my previous da100/gs-1 combo, but that tightness of the bass and that slam factor is certainly present. i don't like the boomy bass of the darths...but it's been replaced by tight and relatively quick bass...so much so that i'm thinking twice about selling these darths now.

anyway, as others have exclaimed previously, the gs-x is a beautiful unit, inflected with justin's attention to detail. the locking umbilical cord is a nice touch. balanced impressions will have to wait for awhile...but soon...hopefully.

Congrats on getting the GS-X, I still have months to wait!

I'm enjoying the DAC1/Balanced 650 combo though. I've been having some USB latency issues but otherwise it works great!

I look forward to your balanced review when you get your cables

did you buy one used or new?

got it used at a very good price considering how in-demand these are and how long the wait is.

ah. i see. that was going to be my next question, if you purchased it new: what was the wait. congrats though. a fine amp. should provide plenty of enjoyable listening.

How does the W5000s sound with the GS-X? Also what cable would be a good match for them? I love my W5ks to death and thinking of going balanced. If i want to I can always get HD600/650 later one since they are a lot easier to recable.

The sound would be up to you and only you, but when I heard the W5000 out of the GS-X (single-ended), I liked it a lot. The GS-X took the W5000 to another level above the Yamamoto HA-02, Lehmann Black Cube Linear, and Eddie Current EC/SS, in terms of detail and soundstage.

As for re-cabling the W5000, only Moon Audio and APureSound offer their services on it, you can't go wrong with either of them.

I would love to see a DA100sig and CDT100 on top of GSX and a recabled RS1. save save save then go balanced!

Did Justin give you any idea as to when (approximately) your GS-X might actually be shipped? I ordered a GS-X during last week of Jan 2008, and would be curious to know what the current waiting time seems to be. I'm very patient but still hope it isn't too long!

Justin told me that he was expecting to ship in 8 weeks as stated but so far my attempts in the last week or so (email/phone) to see if this estimate is going to hold up have not borne any fruit. I knew Justin takes the time to get things right so I'm not too hopeful it will arrive then but I've got my fingers crossed too.
