V-caps iMod on par with Pico DAC: is it true?

Just quickly, I tried with 3 more HD based ipods at work today, 2 $g and a 5G and all gave ticking.

I'm not surprised that many people don't hear it. You need a silent room and even good ears to hear it. I never heard it until I got to an RPX33 and ED9. My Xin SM IV didn't reveal it. The Pico does. Supermicro and home amps I tried don't. ED9, D5000 and TakeT H2 show it, Beyers, Grado and PK1 don't.

I would bet a large sum of money that no 8 ohm loudspeakers will ever reveal it and I defy anyone to hear ticking without the track paused, even in the quietest passage of source music.

The background noise on any section of "silence" in source material is far louder.

I love the imod and v-caps. This ticking noise is not relevant, there is no chance of it ever interfering with listening, it's just too quiet, but it's there in the units I tested.

As you can tell, it's not a concern at all, just a curiosity.

It's definitely not mechanical, when the HD spins up it adds no noise to the output that I can hear but it is clearly audible in the room which is needed to be quiet enough to hear the ticking.

Adam, maybe your ipod does not have that noise, it's possible.

Sorry you get noise with USB power for charging, is that the same with USB (PC) power or have you tried a RAZR phone charger too?

Give me a PM if I can help at all!

I would love to hear from more people trying to hear it from the same unit with different amps/cans.

It's like a double tick, maybe 3 times a second or something. I'll try to define it more accurately when I can.

Just when you mention the hd spinning up, i can hear it plane as day when listening through the livewires, not noticable though while using the grados or Senns.

Kinda annoying

Im going to try again tonight to hear the ticking just incase i have missed it.

Damian, maybe it's to do with impedances or something, maybe all ipods aren't created equal or something. Maybe our foreign Aussie ipods are made different!

It's weird that you don't hear ticking but do hear HD, and I'm the opposite.

I'd love to get more info on this, or, ideally more tests with different cans/amps with one ipod. Or many ipods with the same cans/amp. My test at work is only a sample group of 4 in total.

I'm up for some testing

Quaddy & myself both have a 5.5iMod, voyager & 325i's so perhaps we could set up some sort of test with them to try and get to the bottom of this.

I've had another go to listen for the ticking again. I can hear nothing at all with the grado's/Senn's so went back to the livewires.

Just as i hear the hd spin up i can faintly hear a tick/click then another 1 or 2 of them while it still spining. But this only lasts for 2 or 3 seconds as soon as the hd noise stops so does the tick/clicking.

Is this the same noise or a different one all together?

as reported a bit back, i cannot discern any ticking using my grados or stock ibuds or senns or etys p/s, and i am yet to be able to requisition the shures to test with those. will do soon.

i really want to hear this ticking now, maybe if i do, in the process its helping me 'upgrade' to a more detailed setup

EDIT: The one thing I don't like about the Pico is that you can't use it simply as a source which would seriously KICK ASS! I like the DAC in there, but the amp is another story (I'm spoiled and I love my PPAS). Now if we can get that tiny little DAC separate, that would be "happy dance material"!

This is VERY true.
