AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

  Hello,

I am using AKG612Pro with Cowon Plenue D + Aune B1 combo. On "Normal" EQ setting all is good. Problem is that when I want to boost bass in EQ using some Cowon bass presets I get quite a lot of distortion (crackling, clipping, hell knows how to describe it...). Distortion appears only in a bass heavy songs. Is it normal or something is wrong with my 612's?

the driver is not very powerful, so i suggest you to forget bass boost settings, use your K612 when you want neutral presentation of sound, for bass heavy songs there is other headphones

Got my k601s today, they really are exactly what I was expecting. I suspected they would be like my q701s except with more mids, slightly less treble, and a somewhat smaller and more focused soundstage... I can say I am not disappointed! Need more time to really compare them against my beloved quincy's

I have never heard a headphone more beautifully voiced and engaging where I can just fall into the music unintentionally as the k601... I immediately agreed with and fell in love with the sound presentation on first listen then had this opinion stay consistent throughout long listening impressions. It is really the best balanced headphone in terms of sound signature, soundstage and comfort in my experience. Only my hd800 can beat them because of the better clarity, detail retrieval, and holographic soundstage, but I still prefer my k601 purely on sound signature alone. Most people pair the hd800 with a darker voiced and bassy headphone but I think the k601 is the best complimentary headphone to my hd800s

Hi everyone. I need some advice. I recently bought a k271 studio on eBay and am delighted with its sound signature, the micro details, the attack and decay and the fantastic midrange. I know that there must be some kind of treble peak because I can enjoy these without my hearing aids and they sound really clear, fairly similar to my Beyerdynamic DT660. I have moderate hearing loss in the midrange and especially the treble regions. I drive the K271 with a Topping NX-1 from my iPod classic on low gain setting. Now to my questions
1. Would a k612 have a similar but better sound than my K271, but open-backed?
2. Would my Topping NX-1 have enough power to drive it to reasonable volume? A few people on here have said it is too weak, but a poster on diy audio heaven says he has found it work well.
3. Does the K612 have enough treble clarity like the K271 for me to be able to listen without hearing aids?
4. Would I just be wasting my time and money buying the K612?
Your advice would be greatly appreciated

The k612 doesn't have the greatest mid range. If you need more treble and midrange, I would look torwards audio technica or grado since that is what they are usually known for

Two questions about the K612;
1 Has anyone got the K271studio ( not mk2)and the K612 pro? If so, could you please compare the sound quality of the two?
2 Has anyone used the Cayin C5 with the K612 pro? Is it a good combination?
Thanks in advance

I bought the K612 together with a Cayin C5 and after a few days of intensive listening on my iPod classic via LOD L9
I realised that the iPod's inbuilt DAC was limiting the potential of this combination, so I returned them both and got a refund. I then tried out the K240 Studio with iPod and Topping NX-1 but after a few days I realised that the K240 sound was full of reverberation, making a cello sound totally unnatural. I went back to my original K271Studio and enjoyed the music a lot more. Them I saw the K612 price had dropped to £88 from £102, so I bought it again, this time without a beefy amplifier. I used my little Topping NX-1 via LOD L9 on high gain from my iPod classic and really enjoyed the music again. Everything is smooth, clean, detailed and to scale. Very little noticeable colouration if any, nice neutral response with good deep and punchy bass.My tin ears are enjoying the sound without hearing aids and saving me money too! I am one lucky guy! Sometimes I think we forget about enjoying the music and also the fact that we all have very subjective likes and dislikes in sound quality. Anyway, for me the K612 completely trounces the HD598, YMMV!

After spending many months with the k612, I still prefer my k601 w/ 702 pads.

My setups are as follows: k601 with foam rings removed and k702 pads. k601 with foam pads removed. I feel these setups bring out the absolute best in each headphone.

The k612 is definitely a fine headphone for the price, and if I was forced I would sill enjoy it forever. However, the k601 (with my setup) is more engaging and immersive. This is mostly due to the midrange. The k601 mids are notably more forward and offer more palpable texture. The k612 mids, while smooth, are too warm to convey complex textures. In short, the k612 just feels like a sonically warmed up version of the k601. That's not a bad thing for bass, though. The k612 has notably deeper and more present bass. If that's important for you, the k612 may better suit you. Also the k612 may be better suited for studio use since it's very linear in terms of frequency response. I would feel very comfortable using the k612 to mix/master music or for video editing.

With that said, my k612 suddenly stopped playing in one channel. I need to figure out what's up with that!

i had the same problem with my k601, i opened them up, soldering job removed the problem.
i love my k601 with deep fischer audio velour pads, they are so much better with deeper pads, more precise imaging, more bass, cleaner center imaging also, i love the mids on these headphones, very clean and realistic vocals

K612 now only £85 at Amazon.co.uk! The lowest price it has been for a very long time

Can Fiio X3 2nd Gen drive K601 or K612 decent enough? I've seen several posts here about E10K drives them perfect. After that I looked for the specs of E10K and it's so similar to X3 2nd Gen. What do you think?
A quick note: Since those headphones are not portable and open-back, I will use them generally with my computer. So X3 2nd Gen will be USB DAC for this case.
