AKG K601 & K612 Pro Owners... UNITE!!

Audition an he400i and he560 if you can. Biggest difference between the two is the he560 has sub bass and treble air while the he400i rolls these. 560 also has better imaging and soundstage.

Make sure your amp can push 1w per channel for the 560 and 200mW for the he400i, otherwise sound won't be optimal (more so on the 560)
I can spend up to around 700,if i'm convinced enough there will be a notable difference, let's say,for what it means, a 25% ''better'' listening experiment.

I have the k601 for some years now, and i appreciate them very much. Still, i'm on the quest for a better headphone, what would be a similar headphone but better? I mean,if possible, i'd looking something with a similar sound signature, but with more punchy bass, more detailed mids, and most of all, the same or larger soundstage.Suggestions?

It should be either K7XX, which is not so expensive, or, as already suggested, K712 Pro.
Not that much difference between the two when it comes to sound, or at least not on my hardware.

I'm looking to improve my audio experience with as low budget as possible... which would be better, my onboard(ALC892) with an amp, an amp/dac combo or separate amp/dac? Max budget is under $100.

Onboard sucks. Period, no ifs or buts about it.
However, for under 100$ you don't have many choices so you might as well give FiiO E10k a try.

Well my onboard is MILES better than my asus xonar dgx. Yes i know cheap soundcards arent any good but i was amazed at how much better the onboard was.Im just hoping a cheap dac isnt just snakeoil. A good amp or an amp/dac combo for the same price, which is better?

The T50RP MK3 is a significant improvement in bass response and maintains alot of the other things that make the K612 pro great. I recently reviewed it. For the price of $150 it's worth a shot.

Thanks every one for the suggestions, i have  spend great  times reading about them on the web.

I am now also considering than, instead of getting a 'better' K601, wich i already like and have, i should go for a different kind of headphones.

Massdrop is currently offering Fostex TH-X00, and i find them sexy with that 'smily' EQ curve signature and those two big red woody roundish things...

have been using my K-601 with an Onkyo A-5VL amp for the last few years, such a sweet combo :)

the Onkyo also drives my old K-340 phones really well too !

I just purchased the Akg-601s for a good price and they are surprisingly good. Very detailed and smooth sound. Only thing really lacking is bass. I switched the 601 pads and put them on my Akg-501s and that seemed to improve the Akg K-501 bass quite a bit.

Even though Akg's are flat, they do have a roll off in the lower bass.
Next to a frequency response diagramm, you maybe should look at a step response or 30Hz diagramm.
There you can see, that akgs do not have much bass impact at all.

Anyway, if you get used to akgs, you learn to enjoy the mids of music.
My mood changes quite often, but right now I love the k400 with Instrumental, Jazz and so on.

edit: I've seen that you already own a k501 so I don't have to tell you about akg sound at all ^^
To be honest, I do prefer my k501 and k400 more than the k601. I can't stand the bump at 2-3kHz

I got a pair of K612 the other day. Made in China.

I would describe them as studio headphones for critical listening, they sound amazing, yes, but they are not musical in my opinion. I was amazed at the sounds, but at the same time I was missing the emotional part.

K612 have a liquid pouring like sound signature to them. As some people said here they seem a bit harsh, but if I remember correctly so does live music.

Probably gonna sell them because of the missing musicality. Not a believer in burn-in.

A tube amp does nice things to the K612.. even a cheapo Bravo Ocean.
