Also, you can always commission a build of the exstata.  It would come in far below $1500 even with every bell and whistle you can think of.

The best DIY DAC is the Buffalo 32, in whatever revision it is currently being sold.  That said, it will be about $750-800 for a build.  If you are looking lower down on the spectrum, the Gamma 2 from AMB is great.  I don't know about the best, but very very good.

^^there is no way that it is not legit. I do have a hard time believing that someone just "lost" it and it ended up at gizmodo. I think this might be apple giving the internets a head start on the hype machine.
