Benefits of better amps and dacs

Hi   I think it is true that there are differences in quality of reproduction between very cheap amplifiers and DACs and ones that you pay a bit more for, however the very expensive amplifiers and DACs probably offer nothing over the more sensibly priced ones.   Mass production has meant...

Looking for input on AKG K702

Hi KaBAKZ   I have used my AKG K702 headphones for a few years now and I absolutely love them. These are truly great headphones.   I will now comment on the issues you have raised.   Amplification   Well I haven't heard the "magni/modi" that you have so I have no idea about that.   My...

    Closed headphones for <$200

I really like my AKG K 550 which seem to fulfil the criteria in the original post well.   I would question the desire for "warm" sounding headphones. Obviously "warm" can mean many things however personally I find any audio equipment that warms up the sound to be really unattractive after a...

Wow! Sennheiser HD 540 Reference are so good.

I have K 702s and the Sennheiser HD 540 Reference Golds. Earlier I wrote I had the K 701s however my K 702s are the K 701s with a detachable cables and very dark blue in colour.   The sound of the Sennheiser HD 540 Ref Golds is certainly very different indeed from the K 702s. I don't think...

Wow! Sennheiser HD 540 Reference are so good.

Well, I have the AKG K701 and a pair of Sennheiser HD540 Reference Gold headphones. I bought my HD540 headphones new in 1991 and the K701s I bought a couple of years ago.   The easy answer from me to your question is that there are no similarities imho between these two headphones.   The...

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!

I agree that audio is a well understood science and that our perception of sound is not well understood.   The human hearing did not develop to test out audio products, it developed to assist with the survival of the human species.   While human hearing is extremely sensitive it is...

The AKG K550 Impressions and Discussion Thread!

Well I do agree with you. The AKG K550 headphones give you terrific sound quality and isolation. There are better sounding headphones of course, but it is hard to find headphones that offer this combination of sound quality and isolation. I have never found the K550s to be bass light, however...

    Coolest headphones for summer?

The coolest circum-aural headphones I have are my AKG K702 headphones. These are of pretty much the same design as the K701, Q701 and several other models.   I do think that supra-aural headphones can be suited to hotter weather. I like my B & W P5 headphones in very hot weather, I have used...

    Bluetooth Headphones' Signal Strength

Hi   Thank you for telling me about your experiences with these headphones.   I find the AKG K845BT to be of interest because I really like my AKG K550 headphones and the AKG K845BT looks to be of a similar design.   The first priority is signal strength because of the particular use I...

    Burn in quesiton

I think that usually "Burn In" is more in the mind of the user than it is in the equipment.   If I were you I would just use the RS180 headphones as normal. If they improve in some way over time then they will do so with normal use.

    Bluetooth Headphones' Signal Strength

Thank you tinyman392 for this suggestion. I am checking out the Harman Kardan BT headphones now. I see that in the UK they are £219 which is do-able for me. Also I could get them from Amazon which would let me have 30 days of trial.   My Sandstrom headphones have come back to life since I...

    Bluetooth Headphones' Signal Strength

For some time I've been using a pair of Sandstrom SBTHP11X bluetooth headphones with my MacBook Pro. The sound quality from these is basic but I use them when watching TV programmes and doing a bit of housework at the same time. They are fine for dialogue. The headphones have died all of a...

Bowers & Wilkins P7 - over the ear headphones

I created my first Hi Fi system in the 70s and I have listened to music through many Hi Fi systems and headphones from then until now. I also love to listen to music live of course. Today I listen to classical music almost exclusively and I have a love of the impressionists, best known being...

    NEW! AKG K812

I am very much looking forward to reading reviews of the AKG K812 Pro headphones. I think it is very good to discuss and analyse the design from what we know. However I am amazed at how people draw conclusions about how these headphones might sound based on some diagrams.   I would be very...

Bowers & Wilkins P7 - over the ear headphones

I'm delighted to see the B&W P7 headphones. In August I purchased a pair of P5s and in fact I wrote a review here about ten days after the purchase. However two months later I think I would write an even better review than the one I originally wrote.   The P5 headphones are not the best...

    THE BEATLES ARE OVERRATED

I think something that is distinctive about The Beatles is how they popularised the idea of dropping out for british youth.   The Beatles did not invent dropping out but they did communicate to a great many british youths that this was a good thing to do.   If The Beatles has never existed I...

Do you close your eyes when you listen to music?

I don't close my eyes but I do like lowered lighting. I usually switch off the main light in my study/listening room and then just use a desk lamp which I position so the light is being shawn onto the floor mostly.   The issue of what you are doing with you mind when listening to music is...

Would it be possible for a record label to sell binaural vinyl records?

I would love to see binaural versions made available for current recordings. This would be digital of course. I think this is a bit of a dream which won't see reality, however there are so many people listening to music now on headphones with the iPod and other mobile devices so common, that...

Roughly how many songs should I put on a CD for a demo room session

I just take a handful of CDs that I really like. Then during the demo session I treat it just the same as if I were at home and listening to music as I wish to.   I agree with bigshot, it is best to take a lot of time. I am lucky living close to London because there are loads of Hi Fi...

Schiit or Graham Slee or Lehmann or Violectric?

Yes, the HeadSix is old. It used to be the cheapest portable amplifier. Since a recent purchase of the B&W P5 headphones for portable use I have stopped using the HeadSix actually as the P5s sound excellent plugged straight into my iPod Touch.   My DAC is a Meier Audio StageDAC which is the...

    Is B&W P5 worth it?

I do agree with your posting.   I would certainly not use the P5s as my main headphone at home. For that I would use an open circumaural headphone from someone like AKG or Sennheiser depending on taste.   However for use with mobile devices, on the move, I think the P5 headphones are...
