No the foam has very clear distance between the driver, so its no way used as a shock cushion, the foam does make the bass a bit more impactful however.

Actually I believe this is due to the stiffer earpads of the new HD598's. I've personally switched earpads twice already for my HD558 and the difference between 1 year old earpads and fresh ones is almost like the difference between a HD650 and a HD700 (which is a lot) So you can actually try...

the HD518,558 and 598 have proprietary plastic rings stick to the earpads which click onto the earcup, so it pretty much means you can't swap earpads out with anything else

Agreed, I managed to buy a Momentum On ear by just using the earnings from online art commissions^^ YKAAW when you already are planning what gear to but before you are anywhere close to getting the money to afford them.

YKAAW when you take your open headphones outdoors anyways because they sound better than their closed counterpart. (though they do sound more anaemic outdoors of course)
