At the risk of repeating a previous head-fi post the following query of mine still needs to be solved:

I don't know whether the Zoran Vaddis 882 processor chip in my Toshiba SD-3990 outputs current or voltage for its analog audio output. I would like to implement the Swenson mod for this player. See these links for more info on this mod:

http://johnswenson1.home.comcast.ne..._3960_mods.html
http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/print/2651

The IEEE Spectrum article seems to suggest that if the DAC outputs current, one would not be able to do this mod. Is this true? If not, what's a way around the current-output obstacle?

Someone at head-fi.org said that it, in fact, would be preferable to have this DAC feature current output. (see: http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/show...43&postcount=18)

BTW, as noted in this head-fi thread, neither Zoran nor Toshiba provide literature/service manuals for the processor or DVD player.

Thx for any info you can provide.

I'm going to say with about 95% certainty that it's voltage-output, seeing as the Toshiba SD4960 uses the Vaddis chip (version V) and it's voltage output. It definately appears that the JRC4558 is used simply as a buffer (and there's no coupling cap) so yes, the swenson mod is probably doable.

Thx! I wasn't too sure as the prev model (3980), noted in this thread by another modder, had a few extra/different chips (including an extra Zoran).

As far as coupling caps...there are two stock SMD caps noted in this image (can ya' find 'em in da trace

. Not sure if they count as "coupling" tho'.
