Since the Search function is currently down, I thought I would ask you folks about the David Zinman cycle of Beethoven symphonies, since I've read some good things about it but never actually heard it myself.

We have discussed it here several times........an easy top recommendation regardless of price, this budget set competes with full price ones in almost every respect.

This is modern instrument peformance but done with period instrument influences........that means clarified textures and faster speeds than traditional. The only very slight drawback is the orchestra is not top rank, but regardless this is one of the best Beethoven cycles available.

Good. I am going to grab the last one at my local Borders. They also have most of the Szell Cleveland cycle there too, though, at about the same price....But I think I'd rather have this latest critical edition, as well as Zinman's lighter approach than the Old Masters used to do it.

Zinman is well worth having. I was especially taken with has version of the 3rd symphony. His performances are very much on the fast side. Over all I much prefer him to the recent Rattle Beethoven recordings, he has a much more consistant vision for the set. Whether you like the vision maybe another story. . . . . I'm surprised that you were able to find them at Borders, as the Arte Nova releases have become rather scarce here in North America. . . . . Buy them by all means!

Yeah, Borders used to be filled with Arte Nova discs going for $5 or so. If only I'd known they were going to disappear, I'd have bought all those great Brucker performances they released!
