Did he offer you any other "special deals," since you narrowly "missed out" on that one? This supposedly happens in NYC electronic stores all the time.

No, craigslist is more of a peer to peer sale network for the bay area. No retail/stores involved. I wish though! I told him to email me before he sold any more audio equipment

Seems fishy to me too. If it were legitimate he could sell them on Ebay for several times that price, very easily. [or here!]
