Currently I have an Audigy 2 ZS card which sounds fairly good to me, certainly much better than the AC97 that is on my motherboard. Plugged into this is a set of Altec Lansing 251 speakers which are 5.1 but I only use 2.1 (the other speakers are in a box because the cords are too much bother for the value I get out of surround) and I also have a set of Grado SR-60i headphones, which I plug into the headphone jack on my speakers when I use them. I am not a gamer, so this is for music.

I'm considering an upgrade to my computer and since this sound card is getting quite old, I have to ask if onboard sound (or at least some types of it) has improved enough to catch up or even pass it. If I could do away with my sound card, I wouldn't need PCI slots anymore, and could make my new system much smaller/simpler. Another option would be USB, especially if I could use it on a Macbook Pro (the desktop is a PC)
