Yamaha CD-S2000

Yamaha recently released this new CDP, anyone could try it out yet?

Im not really a fan of that 70s look but i'd have to see it in person to really decide about looks.

MSRP is 1300 Euro in Germany/Europe, i think Street price will settle down to around 1000 Euro sooner or later.

It plays SACD, has 1 DAC for each channel and features balanced XLR, RCA/Cinch & the usual digital outputs.

Aww man... I love the symmetrical circuit layout.

It uses the Burr-Brown PCM1792, which has 132 dB SNR.

That looks absolutely gorgeous!
Check out this high res picture of the black version.

It reminds me of the Esoteric SA-10, but IMO this one looks better and is cheaper as well.

Not so promising: the first buyer reports on the German hifi forum - apparently quite a few units suffer from rather high drive noise both for CD and even more so for SACD playback...

The UK magazine Hi Fi news and record review gave this machine a quite positive review in their March issue though did indicate that there is a rising treble response (theoretically outside the audio band) and that it made poorly recorded discs sound unpleasant.
I've auditioned and owned Yamaha gear in the past and this suggests IMHO that they may be going down their usual route of producing an ultra clear sounding machine but with a diamond hard tiring sound.
I hope this is incorrect since I hope to audition one soon - if I get round to it I'll report further.
Regarding the guarantee Yamaha tell me that it will be deemed null and void unless the player is purchased through one of their recommended dealers. These dealers will only sell the machine in the UK at the recommended UK retail price of £999.99. - this is all against the consumers best interests and as I understand it, illegal under British fair trading regulations, which proscribe retail price maintenance.

That may be a functionality of the DAC chip. I think it's good that it makes bad recordings sound bad, otherwise it might make good recordings sound bad.

This seems to be common practice among the mainstream manufacturers... I know that Pioneer is the same way. I bought a new receiver from a store liquidation company last year and it developed a channel problem a few weeks ago. It should be under warranty, but since I didn't purchase it from an authorized dealer, I'll have to foot the repair bill on a receiver that's basically 6 months old. I guess that's the risk...

Information on this player still seems pretty scarce. Has anyone had any actual experience with one yet?

I have to say, the silver version is (from the photos) one of the most beautiful CD players I've ever seen! As far as features go, I could probably live with the CD-S1000, but that one only comes in boring black instead of sweet silver.

Heard it at a showroom a few months ago. Very nice unit. They had the in silver too though IIRC.

Did not have much time with it but it sounded pretty dynamic (was running with the accompanying amp, I think it is called the A1000/A2000).

I would love to audition this unit at home, using its XLR balanced outputs. This is definitely a serious contender for my current Sony SACD player.

However, I have read report stating that a "click/digital" noise is heard between tracks for SACD playback. This is for me a deal killer, untill they fix this issue. I know Yamaha is aware of this issue (reported even by Japanese consumers) and is currently trying to implement a proper technical solution.

Wow, that's disappointing! Especially on such an expensive unit.
