Not a good buy for linux use. It's using the X-Fi chipset which for a long time had no support at all and now it's just starting to get a little bit.

Here's a good place to check if a card will be supported: Matrix:Main - AlsaProject

thanks for this info. I guess I won't be buying this one. I guess I'll just wait for the bantamdac's reviews

it isn't shown on the list of supported cards (it isn't shown as not supported though...)

USB DACs/soundcards should all be supported by the generic usb-audio drivers.

so based on that, shouldn't the x-fi work?

The card linked is a PCMCIA card, not a USB card. There's also several X-Fi internal PCI cards, which had no support in Linux for a long time.

I'd imagine the USB version would work, though. The only problems I've had with USB devices are related to the mixer defaulting to insane settings where one of the controls had to be toggled (after everything was unmuted) before sound would come out.
