I'll soon be building a male-to-male XLR adapter. I assume I do this the same way as the HD 650 XLR termination, right?

pin 1 is ground -- Leave untouched
pin 2 is the positive signal
pin 3 is the negative signal

Have I got it right?

Yes, exactly. This will just be a gender adapter. Thanks!

As an aside, why do we ground (or shield?) the ICs, but not the headphone cables?

By leaving the ground untouched, does that mean you're not soldering anything to it? Ideally, you should have a shield on the cable; that is part of the design of balanced cables and systems.

Maybe you should just buy an adapter. In most cases, I think an adapter would make the most sense.

You can shield headphone cables, but it makes them stiffer and has less of an impact than shielding further up the signal chain.
