Good news is technology has gotten so much better since 2007. My favorite portable is the Topping G5, 120 SINAD and 6-7 hours in medium gain with demanding headphones. For more portable the Fios DS2 is what I use most times, excellent power and performance for under $50. For a desktop, I just got an SMSL C200 Pro and it's so small you could transport it easily, but lots of power and performance on this thing. It's like a compact version of the SMSL DL200 or DL100, just as much power in a tiny package.
