I know some of you have been bashing this amp to pieces and some seem to like it. I get the impression it is not a bad amplifier but one can get better ones for not much more.
But what if the price is right? I have seen one for just under $100 and figured it might be a nice first amp for me and my HD580's. Are they worth $100? Any opinions?

Can you do tube-rolling with a V1? I think so... if so, then I'd say it's a good deal.

For under $100? I'd say go for it! Despite a certain turn of tide against the X-can on these boards, it's gotten some very good reviews and many of them from members of Head-Fi. Here's one review by a member. http://www.head-fi.org/forums/showth...=&threadid=441

Under $100! Frankly, there's NOTHING ELSE under a hundred even available, and the X-can is certainly a nice piece of kit for that price! Buy it and have fun! It will sound great. Some people even prefer the orginal X-can to the V2 model. (The original is more forgiven of bright, or harshly recorded cds.) You can always turn around and sell it again for the price (and probably more) you've seen it for.

Opps, actually that's a V2 review.

But I still say go for it. Maybe if I decide my V2 is too bright, we can trade later.

Yes, they are both tube-rollable.

Yes, < US$100 is a steal. Leaves money for a X-PSU...

Wow, Thanks ChadBang

I can't believe its 5 months since i wrote that, scarey!!

For $100 (£70) the V1 is a pretty damned good price, especially if retail boxed... is that the case??

lol... Neruda, still doing my "...'s"

It's a 2nd hand with original box and papers are included.. I think it will at least better my integrated's headphone jack (could it become even better??) and I've heard there's a nice synergy going on between the X-Can and the HD580/600.
Let's see if I can get the guy to sell it to me!
