I.e. Would you NOT buy an iPod simply because it stands for mass produced eye candy?

If you are inclined to answer "yes" to that statement, I think it has more to do with you wanting to go against the grain, rather than Apple being "mass produced eye candy".

Their intuitive design and interface is what brought them success with the iPod. Their mass-production is only a result of inginuity and resulting mass acceptance.

While I'm not sold on the iPod touch yet, I've owned 3 iPods and while not one has lasted more than 2 years, I have always been pleased with them.

So no, I would continue to buy them, although they are eye candy, they are also easy to use and have become second nature to me.

Your question is formed as a negative, so we must be careful of our answers.

I don't care what the masses think - I buy what I want.

Any reasonably priced DAP is going to be mass produced. And what's bad about making a DAP look good?

The only thing I don't like about the Ipod is the way Apple is playing the vendor lock in game.

I don't particularly like the look of ipods and hate itunes and the fact you can't just plug one in and drag and drop your music to keep the folder structure etc. intact.
To update the firmware it seems you're stuck with Itunes unlike some other manufacturers that let you download a file, drag it across and install it. If it wasn't for that my classic would be free of itunes.

If you were truly worried about buying mass produced commodities, you wouldn't be looking to buy a DAP of any description.

However, if it works, it works. A chunk of plastic and metal doesn't have to be who you are.

I've never bought an iPod because they don't play open formats. (ogg, flac)

That's why.

it is too expensive for what it is, does not suit me, I liked the idea of ipod touch though it is a tad large(not thick) for me, I like my dap to be minimal in size and I dont use phones so iphone is not an option.

Ditto! Couldn't have said it better myself.

Yep. I have nothing against Apple but their design priorities for their DAPs so not align with what I'm looking for, nor do I expect them to anytime soon. I'm just not the guy they're trying to market to.

I buy iPod's because they are well integrated into iTunes and Mac OS, and have an easy to use GUI. That they are well designed and looks good are just a bonus.

I have never been an Apple lover but came to love their products when I gave them a try and found out that they truely support my needs.
I love iTunes because it is so easy and simple to use. I put in my CD and voilà, it's in my library. After having used my iPod (iMod) for some time I even bought myself a MacBook and honestly I am even a bit angry about myself, that I lived so many years with Windoof and all its problems.

I've never understood this view. There are plenty of reasons not to like ipods, but price isn't one of them IMO. Not at all.

Definitely not for me. I'm far too locked into a folder browsing structure to relinquish control to something that thinks it knows how to organise my life better than I do (even if its right)
