I wear regular glasses, and after a few hours of soldering, particularly if I've used some flux, I notice my glasses are all splattered with a thin film of grease.

I can imagine without glasses this stuff would get directly into your eyes, and that's probably not a good thing.

Whoa, how much flux are you really using? I've never had that problem

Not much, a drop or two when I make interconnects. Don't use it for boards at all - the flux in the core of the solder is enough.

I do look close to the workpiece though.

I just thought it was worth mentioning, because some people complain of eye irritation after soldering, figured this + the fumes would be why.

Your head would almost have to be touching the joint you're soldering for flux to get on your goggles

LOL, I do notice that Cardas solder splatters flux everywhere, but not quite that far.

A lot of that grease is skin oil, actually.

But, eye protection is always a good thing, especially when desoldering. But mostly if you use the ghetto straw method. (Blow, not suck, suck is bad, well this case it is) Molten solder in eye = no good.
