Why has all the dac/amps I've listened to that uses an ESS chip have such a punchy high-end?

Not saying it's a bad thing, I enjoy the little kick in the highs but sometimes the music can sound less reverby and "fun", it sort of narrows everything and makes the music sound more up close and stage-like, or like a speaker system in a car, or an old stereo, and can be a little "ear-piercing" at times. I also notice a loss in the size of the soundstage in some of these ESS devices. It's a flavor I can dig, especially with heavy metal but it's not always enjoyable with electronic-instrument focused music like rap or other music with special effects/artificial sounds and bassy tones, classical music, and even funk/disco because I enjoy being immersed when I listen to those types of music, these ESS devices tend to feel more "mono" sounding, if that makes any sense but they have more details than some other chips I've heard.
