I built a short wave transmitter when I was in high school with exposed 803s that in my memory were close to a foot tall (properly a little exaggerated by time). The father of a friend who worked for the power company gave me a transformer that was used to step highline voltage down to 110, which I used backwards. It produced, I think, 2400 volts, and the voltage went to exposed plate caps. They warmed the room and made almost enough light to read by. I didn't make it as an engineer because I wanted bigger and bigger tubes, when all of the money was to be made in miniaturization.

I've been thinking about building a 845 amplifier for myself this way with all the tubes and components displayed. One challenge is covering and protecting from the B+ which can reach 1000V or more. |
