Why ape. format eats more CPU usage?

my foobar takes up normally 20-30% playing mp3/ape/flac etc

thats with my 1212m re-sampling to 192khz and 24 padded to 32 bit playback.

on my amd athlon 2400+.

APE (de)compression cpu usage depends a lot on compression level.
CPU usage percentages mean nothing w/o that.

Here are couple of independent benchmarks and here are some more.

My cpu usage is within 1% difference between ape and flac. I've had problems with Flac's historically. A few wouldnt play in foobar but would in Winamp, and they frequently crash audio listing programs like MAC. Hence, Ape for me.

Thanks gaboo for the links with comparisons. Now it makes sense and clears my problem. All my .ape files are encoded with "extra high" compression level. I did the test by myself and encoded several tracks with different levels: "fast" level uses only 5-6% of CPU, while "insane" uses up to 60% of CPU.

Time to decode and encode my whole CD collection.......
