I thought the 340C, 540C, and 640C where all introduced in a very close time frame if not together. And it seems each model up one gets better DAC and components... But are these improvements worth the price difference?

Just because it is newer doesn't mean it is better!

"Like its bigger brothers in the Cambridge Audio Azur product line of CD players, the Azur 340C delivers class-leading performance. But this time Cambridge Audio delivers the quality you expect at an even more competitive price point that will definitely surprise you.

The elegant design of the 340C uses proven high-quality Sony laser optics and the same Cambridge Audio servo circuitry as found in the award-winning, higher-price Azur 540C and 640C players. Digital to analog (DAC) conversion comes courtesy of respected chipset manufacturer Crystal. Its CS4338 24-bit / 96 kHz DAC is coupled to an audio-grade operational amp buffer stage."
