Im planning to buy one this christmas. As of now im choosing between Kenwood(the small 10gig version), the Cowon D2, or the iRiver clix. Advice please? Thanks. The sound is primarily my concern.

The Cowon D2 and iRiver Clix will likely sound very similar with no clear winner, though the D2 easily wins in battery life and overall feature set. The Kenwood has a digital amplifier integrated in the unit and will likely sound better than either of the aforementioned models.

It's not in production anymore, but the Rio Karma is one of the best DAPs to use without an amp. Killer sound quality, features and UI.

I have the Microsoft Zune. To my ears the Zune has a very full bodied sound with a solid low end straight out of the headphone jack. You should look at some other threads regarding this player as many have major misgivings about it for various reasons. I do wish that it had gapless playback.

i'd definitely take a kenwood hd30gb9 over a trekstor vibez; removing the DAC and amplifier and just using a digital amplifier reduces the signal chain and overall make for a better player. not to mention it doesn't look tacky and has more HD space!

although it'd cost you a good chunk of change.

Yep, it's old, it's legacy. But I will agree that Rio Karma still holds no.1 ampless(external) DAP IMHO. Too bad it's out of production and now new unit being offered anymore. But heaps can still be purchased off eBay and some of the refurbished units looked really good.

Else, Zune comes close, with testimonials from Rio Karma owners that Zune sounds like a Karma, already I have plans to get myself a Zune when it reach the Asia- Pacific market.

Definitely agree. It's been a DAP carousel for me since I broke my first Karma, and the longest I've had any DAP since then was two months because I never was satisfied. I received a refurbished Karma that I recently purchased off of ebay for $100 shipped, and it was the best decision I could have made. It was in good condition, and listening to it again brought a big smile to my face because I had forgotten how good it sounds.

doubt it, considering that the D2 will 94 mW total output.

Output =! Sound Quality. The Clix is an awesome MP3 player, I can vouch for that.
