I'm generally happy with the Echo Indigo (the original). But I broke it when I grabbed the card instead of the laptop. While I'd be quite happy getting another one, I have to say I was never totally convinced when I amped it. I'm casting around for something very portable, PCMCIA or USB mounted, which has a top-notch Line Out (or maybe a top-notch amp as well). Or do the newer Indigos make a major difference?
My laptops are the Sony VAIO PCG-TR2 (used solely for music and leisure related activities, so the soundcard is most relevant to this machine), and also a PCG-TR5 (a newer version of the TR2), which I might keep or get rid of following the imminent arrival of a VGN-S2XP. It has to work with all of these.
I realised after buying the Indigo that a Line Out was more important to me in an add-on rather than a headphone out. If I'm just travelling with a phone, I tend to take the PX200 which is fine out of the regular headphone out. So the instances when I'd actually fit the card is for amping, usually with a transportable amp. I thought I'd better mention that to guide your recommendations better.
Cost: Anything under $1K is fine, but it has to be worth it. The smaller the better.
