Well, after putting the rest of what I earned into some funds, I have about $250 (max $300) to spend. I am currently torn about 3 ways. First, I could get my DT-770's recabled and woodied. Second, I could go with an electrostatic (a Stax Lambda or an AKG 340). Third, I could go with the AKG K-701. I am going to be building an M3 over the summer and pairing that up with a Lite DAC-AH most likely. I'm pretty much stuck between those three options so I have no idea where to go. Any ideas out there?

How about some Sennheiser love?

Though it's been a good while since I last heard a high end Sennheiser, I am in love with the Grado sound portrayed by my HF-1's. Considering that they are the polar opposites of the Senns, I left them out of the equation.

Kind of. But both are enjoyable to me in different respects.

How about the K701 since no one in GA has them yet?

I was thinking about that actually, it'd be a great can to take to the next Atlanta meet and it is said to have a more forward sound than the Senn's. But would I be missing out on much compared to an electrostat or a K340? Or the power unleashed by converting my DT-770 over to the dark side?

Bump for any more opinions.

How does the K701 compare to the K1000 (might as well ask, since the K701 is supposed to be their top end phone) or the K340?

The K701 doesn't sound anything like the K1000....because it's not a replacement for the K1000. The K1000 is being discontinued. The K701 is a brand new design.

of your choices, certainly a K701 could be interesting, but an electrostatic brings its own joys, what kind of sound improvement are you looking for?

I want an involving sound, not laid back. Bass, as long as it isn't really weak, it'll be ok. A good detailed phone would be nice, which is why I was leaning towards the electrostatics and the K340's. Something closer to the Grado sound than the Senn sound. I was thinking about the K701's since they were reported to be a nice, neutral, forward phone, but I haven't really heard many comparisons to the K340's or electrostats, other than ones saying "These are really a reference class phone." Another thing is, are these phones (the K701's) in a completely different class than my DT-770's and HF-1's? Or should I just hold out and wait for the K340 or a Stax Lambda to pop up?
