What the heck is an "iT.TMP" file?

Associated with the use of itunes-i have over a thousand of them (theyre all numbered) im my "my music" folder.
Does anyone know what these are?

Like the name implies, temporary files iTunes creates. They can be deleted.

Why does iTunes create these in the first place?
Is there a way to turn it off?
Always worried about deleting anything.

What you can do if you're worried about deleting it is move it to another folder, run iTunes and if after a few days everything is running fine delete the folder...
