Looking for some advice. I am considering buying a portable, firstly looking for the best sound (I already have a pair of ER-4S canal phones). Is their any thing that will play WAV files even better FLAC or some other lossless compression. Also what would be a good portable amp to match the Etymotic

rio karma plays flac and wav (plus others like ogg), has great sound, great eq, and is really cheap right now ($180, and it was $400 when it came out). i just bought one and am very pleased.
I think some irivers (eg h120) play ogg, maybe something lossless? someone else chime in here
ipod plays apple lossless
anything else..?
also, if you really want the best sound, you might want a player with a line out for an amp. Those three (rio, ipod, and iriver) are the three with line outs that i know of

IMO you'll just get a lot of biased answers for this one. all three sound pretty much the same to me from line-out to an amp. but straight out of the headphone jack, i would say Karma > H120 > iPod. JMO
All DAP sound great with the proper level of compression. Instead of figuring out which one sounds better, judge them by the features, software and price.
FLAC and Ogg Vorbis were developed by the same guy, and you can put FLAC in an Ogg wrapper, from what I understand. But, they are NOT the same format in the least.
I'm pretty sure FLAC and Ogg were not related in origins, as FLAC joined Ogg relatively recently.
As for players, it depends on your sound preferences. I will say the Karma gives you get best opportunity to find your sound with its great EQ. The other question to really consider is if these DAPs are up to lossless. I used ALAC files on my iPod (to SR71 or SM) and although I switched to 256 AAC primarily for bat life, I really didn't feel it was a sacrifice on the iPod.
