a friend of mine is over in singapore on vacation now and mentioned they have a ton of electronics. I was thinking of getting him to bring me over an mp3 player, but I've been out of this scene for awhile and need a little help. Perferably I'd like a large storage 15gb+ player, not overly large but it doesnt have to be a micro. Basically whats hot and new in the market that may be hard to get over here?

you can ask your friend to head over to Sim Lim Square. its the place with the most electronic stuff. ipods, sony, iriver, iaudio (they call it JNC over here), creative and many other mp3 players by smaller firms from taiwan/china. however, ask your friend to bargain and be careful when buying. check around and compare prices before committing to buy, as the shops there like to rip off tourists. a good tactic would be to quote the sales person the lowest price you found and ask if he will match it.

do note that they will have add a surcharge of around 3% of the player's price if your friend is paying by credit card. there is no surcharge if he is paying by cash.

one of the shops to avoid is Song Brothers. they are known to rip tourists off. a reliable shop would be Hai Chew Electronics.

do not buy headphones/canalphones in singapore as the prices here are much more expensive than buying online.

another much more reliable place would be Mustafa Shopping Centre in the Little India area. Its along Serangoon road. ask a cab driver to take you there . the prices there are usually cheaper than recommended retail price and the people there are more honest. i usually go to Mustafa to buy my mp3 players. there is no surcharge at Mustafa when paying by credit card.

hope that helps.
