What is the mixing-recording technique used at MIC CHECK from RAGE AGAINST THE MACINE-THE BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES after 2:28

Vocals sound centered and narrow at first and right at the next line they are widespread. Then back narrow again etc.

How is this effect achieved?

well the first part, the narrow part, was probably sung into a mono mic, and the wider part was probably sung into a stereo mic.

but yes, its always nice to see people playing with stereo imaging as there's very few dimensions to audio, and stereo effects are the strongest(next to dynamic range)
